Terrapins and Nittany Lions in Big Ten Showdown
Maryland (2-4) and Penn State (5-2) will collide in a Big Ten battle on Saturday. The opening kickoff at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore is slated for 3:30 PM ET. At the time of this writing, college football betting odds at Bookmaker.com has Penn State as a 6.5 point favorite, and the posted total is 47.0. These teams met in 2014 during Maryland’s inaugural Big Ten season, and the Terrapins upset Penn State 20-19 in Happy Valley.

An End to a Win Streak
Penn State was riding high heading into last Saturday’s game in Columbus against #1 Ohio State. After all, they were riding a five game win streak, and were extra motivated from being installed as an 18.5 point underdog. They proceeded to get trounced by the Buckeyes 38-10, and it’s back to square one. In their two losses this season against Temple and Ohio State, the Nittany Lions offense was stymied. They combined to score just 20 points and had a paltry 500 yards of total offense. Their five wins this season have come against Buffalo, Rutgers, San Diego State, Army and Indiana. That’s hardly a murderer’s row type of stretch. They do catch another break this week by facing a Maryland team that’s lost three in a row, and all of those defeats have come by 21 points or more. It’s worth noting, Penn State has gone 6-1 under the total this season, and there was a combined average of only 40.7 points scored per game.

Tough Year for Terps
Maryland received a much needed week off prior to this upcoming game on Saturday. During their previous game, they played #1 Ohio State extremely tough on the road before falling 49-28. As a matter of fact, the game was tied 21-21 midway through the 3rd quarter, and then Ohio State scored 28 unanswered points to pull away. That was the final straw for former head coach Randy Edsall who was fired the next morning. Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach Mike Locksley will take over on an interim basis to finish out the season. Locksley was the former head coach (2009-2011) at New Mexico, and had a dismal 2-26 record before being let go four games into the 2011 season. Maryland has been outscored during this current three game losing streak by a cumulative margin of 122-34.

Final Analysis
This is an extremely tough game for me to gauge. Of course Penn State has the better record, and would seem like a logical choice. However, I liked the fight that Maryland displayed in the previous game at Ohio State, and sometimes teams respond in a positive manner after a head coach has just been fired. I have a sneaky suspicion this will be one of those instances. I’m going to have a very small lean toward the underdog for one of my college football picks.
