The college football odds board is full of big spreads for the early kickoffs this Saturday, but will that necessarily lead us into a ‘dog day afternoon?

A team of drunken vicars might have a better chance against the Clemson Tigers than the Wake Forest Demon Deacons do this Saturday when the Bloody Mary segment of the schedule kicks off. Fans of Rowan Atkinson might be the only ones to get that reference.

To be fair, Wake Forest is only a 21½ point underdog for the ACC battle that boots at noon on ESPN2, hardly the widest spread on Saturday’s NCAA football odds board. Still, it has been a long time since the Demon Deacons beat the Tigers, their last win coming in 2008 when George ‘Dubya’ Bush was wrapping up his tenure in DC. Clemson has won the last eight encounters to build a 64-17-1 advantage in the rivalry.

Wake has covered the last three, so taking Dave Clawson’s crew plus the three touchdowns is inviting. But I’m seeing more value in the ‘over’ 47½.

Sooners Seek 19th-Straight Over Cyclones
Of course, if you think Clemson has a stranglehold on Wake, consider Oklahoma and its treatment of Iowa State. The Sooners have built a 74-5-2 advantage over the Cyclones by winning the last 18, ISU’s last victory over OU coming midway through Papa Bush’s residency at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. FOX carries the kickoff under what should be sunny skies in Norman, and the Sooners are laying 30 at 5Dimes where the total has dropped a few to 63½.

Oklahoma is coming off its bye week, and the Sooners do have a big rivalry matchup against Texas on deck next Saturday. The Cyclones have to hope OU is a little slow out of the gate and looking ahead to the Longhorns. I’m tempted again to take that big wad of points, but will play this one ‘under.’

Lowest Total Of Week 6 Can Be Found In Nashville
Continuing with our theme of trying to find value in big spreads during Saturday’s early part of the schedule, we next head to the SEC for a collision between the Georgia Bulldogs and Vanderbilt Commodores. ESPN’s cameras are in Music City for the contest that finds the Bulldogs laying 17½ with a measly 40½ for the total, easily the lowest mark of the week.

Here again, we find one side with a big lead throughout history with ‘dem Dawgs ahead 55-20-2. It’s the ‘Dores with current bragging rights, however, following a 17-16 upset last year between the hedges as two touchdown underdogs. Vanderbilt has also covered the last three at old Dudley Field, though Georgia won two of the tilts.

There is a chance for showers in Nashville during the afternoon, along with a 12-15 mph crosswind outta’ the west. I’m cashing my free college football pick on the Commodores.
