Week 4 of the College Football season is traditionally the first strong week of the season.  This year is no exception, as it is the strongest and deepest card of the season to date.  This includes more Top Plays than in the first 3 weeks combined.

Southern Miss Golden Eagles vs UTEP Miners
Your patience from the first 3 weeks will now be rewarded, as we have increasingly more data to make the analysis. Not that it has been bad so far with selections on this site for the year to date standing 16-7 ATS (70%) in CFB and NFL combined.

Each week in this space, I will look for a team to continue to perform with the same excellence that they have in their recent history.  In other words, IF IT AINT BROKE, DON’T FIX IT!  Such applies this week to the Golden Eagles who, even under 1st year HC Hopson (the former highly successful HC at Alcorn St.), the Golden Eagles have not skipped an offensive beat.  Now in bounce back mode, following a game where they dominated the stat line, I look for a convincing double-digit victory by the Golden Eagles today.

UTEP fell victim to a fired-up Army team in a 66-14 loss as 6 point home dog.  That means that in the last 2 weeks, they have been outscored by Army and Texas 107-21, being outgained 1,016-477.  Despite those poor performances, the line remains unchanged from where it would have been in the beginning of the season.  There remains plenty of value for S. Mississippi, considering they were 24 point favorite in Hattiesburg last year when they thumped the Miners (34-13).  Until the Miners show the ability to turn it around, they are not to be trusted under HC Kugler, who is 9-20 ATS as an underdog and whose pass defense allowed over 80% completions in the last 2 games.  That’s bad news against the Eagles’ prolific offense!

Despite the switch to HC Hopson, it is still veteran QB Mullens and RB Ito-Smith, who run the offensive show for the Eagles. Last year, they were 5-1 ATS as favorite.  They are recently 6-3 ATS on the road and 10-5 ATS of late.  That is why their 37-31 home loss to a rapidly improving Troy team was a bit confounding.  Closer inspection of the box score finds that the Eagles actually outgained the Trojans 421-309.  In short, the Eagles proved that the offense is just fine to thank you, leading me to the conclusion that IF IT AINT BROKE, DON’T FIX IT!  Should that be the case against the very suspect defense of the Miners, it could get ugly very quickly at this border town tonight.

I invite you to put the College Football odds in your favor and join me in my College Football week 4 pick on S. Mississippi tonight.
