Iowa State Cyclones vs West Virginia Mountaineers

Line: West Virginia -2.5
West Virginia 36 Iowa State 23

West Virginia has won the last three games over the Cyclones by an average margin of victory of 22.3 points per game. The Mountaineers won this game last year in Ames by a score of 49-19.

This game is a contrast in styles as the Mountaineers have a high octane up-tempo attack while the Cyclones feature a more methodical offense that wants to run the football and work off of play action.

Iowa State is averaging 112 rushing yards per game and is passing for 269 yards per game entering this match-up.

Iowa State quarterback Kyle Kempt is completing 66% of his passes for 859 yards with 9 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

In order for Kempt to have success against West Virginia, the offense must be able to run the football consistently to sustain drives.

Over the last five games against Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas Tech and TCU the offense has averaged 91.6 rushing yards per game.

Defensively, Iowa State is allowing 126 rushing yards per game and is giving up 220 passing yards to opposing offenses.

On the road this season, the Cyclones are allowing 274 passing yards per game and must do a better job on the road in Morgantown this Saturday to get the win.

Iowa State is allowing 42% to opposing offenses on third downs this year and will be challenged by West Virginia quarterback will Grier this weekend.

Grier is coming off of a sub-par performance in which he tossed two touchdowns with four interceptions in the team’s 50-39 loss at home to Oklahoma State.

On the year, Grier has completed 63% of his passes for 2,752 yards with 28 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.
