The Virginia Tech Hokies are already 1-0 in ACC play, while the North Carolina Tar Heels have yet to face a conference foe. Here's a look at our top Virginia Tech-North Carolina picks.

Both the Hokies and Tar Heels are coming off double-digit home losses. That’s about all these two groups have in common. These two programs play very different styles, with the Hokies preferring low-scoring games, and the Tar Heels hoping to score in at least the 30s every week. Which style will win out on Saturday?

Here are our top Virginia Tech vs. North Carolina college football picks for Week 5 (odds via DraftKings Sportsbook; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

Virginia Tech vs. North Carolina Odds Analysis

Weather is likely to play a factor in this one, as the remnants of Hurricane Ian strike North Carolina. Because of the storm, the total has dropped from 58 all the way to 51. However, the spread has not moved much at all. The Tar Heels opened as 8.5-point favorites, and the line has moved to -9. Ninety-five percent of the tickets and 80% of the handle are backing UNC.

Virginia Tech vs. North Carolina ATS Pick

North Carolina -9 (-110) ★★★

This is more about how bad the Hokies are than how good the Tar Heels are. Yes, the Hokies are 2-2, but their wins were against Wofford and lowly Boston College. Their two losses have been bad, with a road defeat to Old Dominion and a 33-10 beat down at the hands of West Virginia on their resume.

The Tar Heels’ lack of defense makes it so that the game is never out of reach for their opponents. They’re allowing 39.5 points per game so far. However, the Hokies have done nothing to prove that they can score nearly that many points.

It will take a few drives, but quarterback Drake Maye will put UNC up, and the Hokies won’t be able to score enough to close the gap.

Virginia Tech vs. North Carolina O/U Pick

Under 51.5 (-110) ★★★

The weather could be a huge factor in this one, though Chapel Hill may not see the effects of the storm until the second half of this game.

Yet, even if the weather wasn’t an issue, the Under would still be the play. The Hokies have one of the better defenses that Maye has had to go against this season, and while he is certainly going to lead touchdown drives, the Hokies will get enough stops to keep UNC under 30 points.

As for the Hokies’ offense, don’t expect much from them for the remainder of the season. Even though they’re playing UNC, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them struggle to get into the 20s, no matter what the field conditions are.

Virginia Tech vs. North Carolina Prop Pick

First quarter Under 10.5 (-110) ★★★★

There has not been a Virginia Tech game this season that has seen the first quarter go over 10 points. The Hokies have been good defensively in the first quarter, which could pose problems for Maye.

Additionally, Virginia Tech has scored just two first-quarter touchdowns, with one of them coming on a 10-yard drive against Boston College. With the potential of a sloppy field, a Hokies’ defense that can take a few drives to figure out, and an offense that has been bad all season, the first quarter should easily cash the Under.
