Epic Rivalry Continues Between USC and Notre Dame
The #14 Notre Dame “Fighting Irish” (5-1) hosts USC (3-2) on Saturday in what will be another chapter in this long standing annual rivalry. According to college football betting odds at the time of this writing, Notre Dame is a 6.5 to 7.0 point favorite, and the total ranges from 60.0 to 61.0. The opening kickoff in South Bend is slated for 7:30 PM ET, and the game will be aired on NBC. Notre Dame will be out to atone for last season’s humiliating 49-14 loss to USC in Los Angeles.

Trouble in Troy
The USC Trojans are coming off a disheartening 17-12 loss as a 17.0 point home favorite against Washington in their previous game. Inexplicably the potent USC offense was stifled by a stout and physical Huskies defense. USC star quarterback Cody Kessler had by far his worst game of the season, going 16-of-29 for just 156 yards, no touchdowns, and was intercepted twice. After starting the season 2-0, USC has now lost two of their last three games. Even more annoying for Trojans fans was the fact that both of those losses came at home. In each instance, USC was thoroughly dominated physically on both sides of the ball. It won’t get any easier this week at Notre Dame, and especially considering all the turmoil created by Monday’s dismissal of former head coach Steve Sarkisian. Some teams bond and become stronger from adversity, while others never seem to recover. The jury is still out on USC, and Saturday will go a long way in determining what path they’ll be taking.

Hail to “The Irish”
Notre Dame bounced back from its lone loss of the season at Clemson, and was able to knock off unbeaten Navy 41-24 last Saturday. “The Irish” turned in a dominating second half outscoring Navy 17-3, and enabling them to cover as a 14.0 point favorite. If Notre Dame comes up with a win on Saturday, the rest of their schedule sets up nicely, and they could be 10-1 heading into a season finale at Stanford. The way Stanford is playing right now, that game against Notre Dame can potentially be for a spot in the four team college football playoff on New Year’s Eve. However, there’s still a lot of football left to be played between now and then. Notre Dame can ill afford to look beyond USC, and as the old cliché goes, “beware of the wounded animal”.

Final Analysis
The Trojans are a team in flux right now, and you have to feel for those young men who’ve been put in quite a precarious position. One thing you can be rest assured of, Notre Dame and their faithful contingent will display no sensitivities to their fierce rivals issues. Those Irish eyes will be smiling. I’m banking on the home favorite to cover for one of my college football picks.

College Football Pick: Play on Notre Dame -6.5 (+107) at Pinnacle.
