O/U College Football Picks***

Air Force Falcons vs. California Golden Bears (Game in Fort Worth, Texas)
This is a game in which the Falcons should like their chances. California head coach Sonny Dykes made no secret over the past few weeks that he was not happy coaching with the Golden Bears. Dykes interviewed with multiple athletic directors in search of other jobs. He clearly wanted to get another job, not happy with his situation at Cal, including salary and other forms of his overall compensation package. No other schools wanted Dykes, though, and so for that reason, he stayed at California – not because he was content to remain in place, but because he had no other real choice. The situation with Dykes is something players notice and pay attention to. Bowl games are often about motivation, so if you wanted to identify the more motivated team here, Air Force would be the choice. If Cal was a three-point favorite, this would be a harder call, but it seems that Air Force should definitely be able to cover a full touchdown spread for our college football pick.

Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. LSU Tigers (Game in Houston)
The key point to make here is that Texas Tech’s defense has been horrible during the season. The Red Raiders gave up more than 50 points in several different games. They gave up more than 60 points three times. This is one of the worst defenses in the country among all the schools in one of the five major conferences – the Big 12, Pac-12, Big Ten, ACC, and SEC. LSU has had its struggles at times on offense, but against Texas Tech, the Tigers should have the kinds of matchups, especially in the trenches, which should allow them to do very well. LSU’s offensive line should be able to bully Texas Tech’s defensive line all night long. Leonard Fournette should have a monster game as LSU’s running back. This one feels easy to call for LSU against the college football odds.

Nevada Wolfpack @ Colorado State Rams (Game In Tucson)
This is a matchup that’s probably going to come down to one thing: can Colorado State stop the run? They’re not great in that particularly area but they’re not awful either. If Nevada had a two-dimensional offense, it would probably be more of a concern. Instead, the Rams should be able to load up on the run and get some stops or at least limit the Wolfpack to some field goals instead of touchdowns.

The Rams seem to have more momentum as they’ve won four straight coming into this game and five of their last six. They’ve already shown down the stretch that they can win even when they get rolled up on the ground (New Mexico had 268 rushing yards and three scores and still lost), so they’ll probably find a way.

North Carolina Tar Heels vs. Baylor Bears (Game in Orlando)
This is a game in which the main thing to note is that Baylor quarterback Chris Johnson, who was injured in the season finale against Texas, will play. This is good news for Baylor, even as the news came down that Jarrett Stidham, the quarterback ahead of Johnson on the depth chart earlier in the season, will not play. Johnson played well against Oklahoma State. He played poorly against TCU, but that was in a driving rainstorm. Johnson should be able to play well in this game, and that should be enough for Baylor’s offense to outscore North Carolina.
