How will the familiarity of conference opponents affect the quality of play and the ultimate results? Here are three games on the card worth studying before placing college football picks.

Utah Utes vs. Oregon Ducks
This is a game in which there’s a lot of mystery, enough to turn your betting pick in one direction or the other. The injury situation is very important in this one, more so than in a lot of other games you might bet on over the weekend. Both teams are mum on the statuses of their number one quarterbacks, Travis Wilson of Utah and Vernon Adams of Oregon. What muddies the picture even more is that the backup quarterbacks look very capable of doing well. Kendal Thompson of Utah and Jeff Lockie of Oregon have both started games, and moreover, they both started last weekend. Their teams should be able to trust them if they are called upon.

What’s harder to figure out is Lockie. He did start last weekend, but that was his only start with Oregon. Thompson has started a lot more games in his career, previously with the Oklahoma Sooners and last year with Utah in addition to last week against Fresno State. If this does become a battle of the backups, Oregon might function well enough to win, but Utah might function better than the Ducks, enough to make the point spread very close. The best play here is to expect Oregon to win, but not to cover. It’s a tough game to bet on, but that pick splits the difference and probably has the best college football odds.

UCLA Bruins vs. Arizona Wildcats
The key point to make here is that UCLA linebacker Myles Jack was injured this past week in practice. He’s out for the season, but what’s more specific is that this will be his first game out. UCLA is going to have a very tough time replacing him in this game. The Bruins might figure out how to replace him in a month, but this week, the turnaround is going to be very difficult. It is true that Arizona linebacker Scooby Wright is questionable, but Arizona has played a few games without him and has therefore been able to adjust. UCLA freshman quarterback Josh Rosen will play his first conference road game, and that will be tough for him to deal with. Take Arizona with your college football picks.

Mississippi State Bulldogs vs. Auburn Tigers
It’s true that Mississippi State is not as good as it was last year. The Bulldogs lost a lot of starters on offense and have already lost a conference game. However, Auburn is in crisis, and you just don’t know what to expect from quarterback Sean White, who is replacing Jeremy Johnson, being benched with ineffectiveness. White is a total mystery, but Mississippi State has Dak Prescott, a veteran quarterback. That’s going to be the difference. Take Mississippi State.
