Our college football betting expert previews the Thursday night nationally televised game between Clemson and Georgia Tech. Go inside to read this explanatory betting article culminated with a college football pick.

Georgia Tech will host #5 Clemson on Thursday night in a battle of unbeaten teams. The opening kickoff from Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia is slated for 7:30 PM ET, and the game will be televised by ESPN. Clemson defeated Georgia Tech 43-24 at home last season, and easily covered as a 7.0-point favorite.

Early (9/19) college football betting odds at 5Dimes indicates that Clemson is an 8.5-point road favorite. BetOnline is the only one of the best sportsbooks to have an early posted total, and that number is currently 53.5. Be sure to check out the handsome bonuses that 5Dimes and BetOnline are presently offering.

Tigers ACC Opener
Quite predictably, Clemson is off to a 3-0 start, and each of those victories came against non-conference opponents. The Tigers didn’t exactly live up to the preseason hype during its first two contests. They opened with an uninspiring 6-point win at Auburn and failed to cover as a 7.5-point road favorite. Clemson entertained Troy in its home opener 2 weeks ago, and despite being a sizable 34.5-point favorite, barely escaped with a 30-24 win. This past Saturday was a whole different story against South Carolina State, evidenced by a 59-0 Clemson blowout of their FCS opponent, and the Tigers even managed to cover as a massive 53.5-point favorite.

Thursday will open Clemson’s more challenging ACC slate. The Tigers are 18-2 in their previous 20 ACC contests, and that includes 10 conference wins in a row.

Upset-Minded Rambling Wreck
“The Rambling Wreck” of Georgia Tech will be out to pull off a substantial upset, and looks to replicate last season’s win over Florida State as a 5.0-point home underdog. Furthermore, Georgia Tech is 3-0 at home against Clemson during head coach Paul Johnson’s tenure. The Yellow Jackets have won each of its first 3 games, and will be aiming to go 4-0 for just the fourth time since 1990.

The Yellow Jackets are coming off a decisive 38-7 home win against Vanderbilt and easily covered as a 6.5-point favorite. Unlike Thursday’s opponent, this will be the Yellow Jackets second ACC game. Their ACC opener (9/1) against Boston College was played in Ireland, and Georgia Tech scored a go-ahead touchdown with 0:35 left to play, and walked away with a 17-14 win in that contest. Additionally, they defeated Mercer (FCS) the following week by a convincing 35-10 margin.  It’s no surprise that Georgia Tech has averaged 257.3 yards rushing per game during its first 3 contests. After all, their trademark triple option offense has made them perennially one of the nation’s top rushing offenses, and that’s coincided with Paul Johnson’s arrival in 2008.

College Football ATS Betting Angle
Clemson has seen each of their first 3 contests go under the total, and its defense allowed a paltry 12.3 points per game.

Any road favorite of 3.5 to 10.0, coming off 3 or more straight games that went under the total, and is allowing 14.0 points or less per contest, resulted in those road favorites going 25-5 (83.3%) ATS since 1992. The average point spread was -6.0, and those road favorites had a plentiful + 17.0 point per game differential.

Clemson is the far superior team in this game. Although that doesn’t assure anything, I firmly believe they’ll be primed for a superb effort before a national television audience. My early lean is on the road chalk and one of my college football week 4 prediction will point to precisely that.
