Under the Thursday Night ESPN Lights
The BYU Cougars will host the Houston Cougars in their home opener on Thursday at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah. The game will be televised nationally by ESPN with a scheduled 9:00 PM ET kickoff time. According to college football betting odds BYU is an 18.5 point home favorite.

Great Start for BYU
BYU has been impressive in getting off to a 2-0 start to the season with both wins coming on the road. Last week’s 41-7 win over nationally ranked Texas was particularly impressive despite the Longhorns being without their starting quarterback David Ash (injury). In that win last week, BYU outgained Texas 429-258. That was on the heels of an opening week blowout win at Connecticut 35-10, and in that contest they outgained the Huskies 513-335. BYU forced 6 turnovers by their opponents over their first 2-games, and they will be facing a Houston team that committed 8 turnovers during their 1-1 start.

A New Era Began in 2014 at Houston
The Houston Cougars began their 2014 season by christening a brand new on campus stadium. Unfortunately it didn’t go as planned in their home opener, as they were upset as an 8.0 point favorite 27-7 by the UTSA Roadrunners. The Cougars were plagued in that loss by committing 6 turnovers, and were held to a miserable -26-yards rushing. They were able to bounce back at home this past Saturday with a 47-0 rout of FCS Grambling although failing to cover as a 49.5 point favorite. They were able to amass 275 yards rushing and average 6.9 yards per rush in the win. They were also able to reverse the bad fortune from the week before by creating 6 Grambling turnovers. Houston will be out to avenge a 47-46 home loss to BYU a season ago.

Final Analysis
There’s no denying how impressive BYU has looked early in the season. However, despite playing in their home opener, they’ve literally had a tough road to endure. They opened the season by having to travel across the country to play a game in East Hartford, Connecticut. Then last Saturday had to go on the road once again to face a nationally ranked opponent. Now they will be facing a dangerous opponent that returns 17-starters from a season ago, and will be playing with revenge, and having to overcome these intangible factors while playing on just 4-days rest. For our Thursday night sports picks, I like Houston to hang in this game and make it much more interesting than the BYU faithful would care for.
