Our NCAAF handicapper takes an early peek at Friday’s game between Marshall & Southern Miss. Join us in reading this insightful betting preview article which culminates with his point spread pick.

Friday Night Lights in CUSA
Marshall will host Southern Miss in a Friday night Conference USA clash. The open kickoff at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington, West Virginia is slated for 7:00 PM ET. The game will be aired on ESPN2. According to current (10/5) college football betting odds, Marshall is anywhere from a 5.0 to 6.0 point favorite. Marshall has won each of the last four meetings between these conference rivals. The Thundering Herd outscored Southern Miss during the last three years by an overwhelming cumulative margin of 183-54. However, former star Rakeem Cato was the Marshall quarterback in those games, and he’s since graduated.

Impressive Start to 2015
Granted that Southern Miss has gone just 3-2 so far, but they covered in all five of those contests. Their two losses came against a very good Mississippi State team and at Nebraska by just 8 points. The Southern Miss offense has operated at a high level thus far. They’ve averaged 40 points and 514 yards per game to this point. They’re led by quarterback Nicky Mullens. The Golden Eagles signal caller has competed 66% of his pass attempts for 1691 yards, 14 touchdowns, and only 3 interceptions.

Deceiving Record
Marshall is 4-1 thus far, and they’ve really done nothing to pass my personal eye test. They did defeat Purdue at home in their season opener 41-31. That result comes with a handicapping asterisk since Marshall scored two touchdowns via interception returns, and they were outgained by 59 yards. Two weeks ago they barely squeaked by Kent State 36-29, and needed two overtimes to do so. Their offense has been mediocre at best, averaging just 347 yards per game.

Final Analysis
Southern Miss has played the tougher schedule and has a way better offense than Friday’s opponent. The combination of those two factors, and some huge revenge issues that need to be atoned for, make the road underdog the betting value in this spot. I’m going to follow that logic in order to make one my college football picks this week.
