A strong ground attack and a solid defense is behind No. 19 San Diego State’s 6-0 start and a big reason why the Aztecs are favored by a touchdown on the NCAA football odds to beat Boise State on Saturday.

NCAAF Season Record: 15-20-1 (-6.30)

Playing in separate divisions of the Mountain West Conference has kept the Boise State Broncos and San Diego State Aztecs off each other’s schedule the past two years. There are some who suspect that has been a big reason why the Aztecs advanced to the MWC title tilt in 2015-16. Others point to the Broncos not being able to beat Air Force the last two years as why they didn’t at least match up once in the conference championship.

They’re on the schedule this season and set for a 10:30 PM (ET) start Saturday in America’s Finest City, CBS Sports Network handling the broadcast chores. 5Dimes has No. 19 San Diego State -7½ with extra juice on taking Boise State and the points; other shops are selling an even touchdown spread. One of the final games on Saturday’s card has one of the lowest totals for the day, 45-45½.

Aztecs Have Only Committed 4 Turnovers

The sting from being upset at home by Virginia still lingers for Bryan Harsin and the Broncos. Favored by two touchdowns, Boise State could never get its offense going while Kurt Benkert was busy directing drive after drive to lead the Cavaliers to a 42-23 win, the Broncos’ worst home loss in 16 years. Boise State had extra time to think about that defeat, then came out of the bye week to hand BYU a 24-7 setback in Provo last week. The offense was more balanced in the win over the Cougars, but still ranks in the bottom third of the country in total yards (341.0 ypg).

San Diego State kept its perfect season going with an easy 41-10 win at UNLV this past Saturday, the final easily covering a closing -10½ line on the NCAA football odds board. Junior QB Christian Chapman didn’t post eye-popping numbers, but once again efficiently directed the Aztecs on offense while extending his string to 112 attempts without an interception. Rashaad Penny turned in another big game with 170 yards rushing, increasing his season total to 993, second in the country. The defense is 19th in the nation, allowing 311 yards per game.

Rivalry Trends, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

Saturday’s winner will take the lead in the rivalry, the schools having split the only four meetings to date. Home teams prevailed in the 2013-14 clashes after visitors won in 2011-12. This is the lowest total for Broncos-Aztecs contest, the other four ranging from 50-57 and three of them going ‘over.’

Clear skies and temps in the upper 60s should make for near-perfect football weather at kickoff. The Aztecs won’t be able to run on Boise State as easily as they did against UNLV, but they should be able to do enough to cover for my free college football pick.

Free NCAAF Pick: San Diego State -7

Best Line Offered: Heritage

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3187958, "sportsbooksIds":[169,1275,93,19,180], "LineTypeId":1, "PeriodTypeId":1 }[/]
