Intriguing Non-Conference Matchup between Memphis/BGU
Bowling Green will host Memphis on Saturday. The opening kickoff at Perry Stadium in Bowling Green, Ohio is slated for 3:00 PM ET. This will be the first meeting on the gridiron between these schools since 2004. That matchup occurred in a bowl game, and BGU came away with a 52-35 win. According to current college football odds (9/18), Memphis is a 3-point road favorite and the total is 79 across the major sportsbook landscape.

Memphis Update
The Tigers have opened the season with a pair of very impressive wins, defeating Missouri State 63-7, and last Saturday in a 55-23 blowout at Kansas. Granted they didn’t defeat the who’s who of college football, but they were dominant on both occasions. The offense racked up a combined 1170 total yards, and they displayed a powerful running game that amassed 598 of those yards. Quarterback Paxton Lynch wasn’t asked to do a lot. However, when called upon, he was 30-for-37 (81.1%) for 432 yards and 3 touchdowns. One thing that will need to be cleaned up this week pertains to a -3 turnover differential in the Kansas win last Saturday. They also must be cognizant of the fact that their upcoming opponent has faced considerably tougher competition thus far. Their win at Kansas last week broke a 16 game non-conference road losing streak.

Falcons Offense Soars
BGU has been dynamic offensively in their first two games with both being played on the road, at Maryland and Tennessee. They’ve averaged 39.0 points 624.5 total yards per game. The star of the show has been senior quarterback Matt Johnson. He completed 60.1% of his passes for 915 yards, 8 touchdowns, and was only intercepted once. In their opening loss to Tennessee, the game was much closer than the 59-30 final score would indicate. They were outgained by just 47 total yards, and were victimized by poor special teams kick coverage, giving Tennessee a short field on four separate occasions. They bounced back with a superb effort during a 48-27 win at Maryland last Saturday, upsetting the Terrapins as a 7.0 point underdog. An area of concern pertaining to this matchup is the Falcons run defense. They allowed 390 yards on the ground in their first two games, and will be facing a very potent rushing attack on Saturday. BGU has won each of their previous eleven games following a win by 21 points or more, and covered in ten of those contests. In addition, the Falcons are 5-0 SU&ATS in their last five non-conference home games, including wins over Indiana and Tulsa.

Final Analysis
This has all the earmarks of a very entertaining down to the wire type of game. When push comes to shove, I’ll give a small lean with my college football picks to the home underdog who possesses a red-hot quarterback (Matt Johnson).
