The Temple Owls, at 5-6, still need one more a victory to become bowl-eligible. They get their last chance at that sixth win when they trip South to New Orleans to take on 3-8 Tulane Saturday night. Here's our breakdown of this contest, with our free college football pick, for those interested in that kind of thing.

Owls-Wave Betting Odds

Bettors who think Tulane could win this game outright could get a price of +145 on the moneyline at Sport Bet.

Owls-Wave: The Match-Up
Tulane broke a decade-long bowl drought last season, winning seven games in its second season under Coach Johnson. But the Wave took a step back this season and won't return to a bowl.

Tulane opened this season 0-2, with losses to Tulsa and Georgia Tech, then beat Southeastern Louisiana 35-20. The Wave then lost back-to-back games at Duke and at Rutgers, then beat Connecticut 12-3. They then lost two more in a row to Central Florida and Cincinnati, then upset Houston as 17-point dogs on the road. But Tulane has since lost its last two games, to Memphis and East Carolina, by a combined score of 72-13. The Wave then had last week off.

On the other side of this match-up Temple won just two games in its first season under Coach Rhule last year; this year the Owls own five victories, but still need that one more to become bowl-eligible.

Temple started 4-1 this season, with a road win at Vandy and a 31-24 loss to bowl-bound Navy. The Owls then lost back-to-back games at Houston and at Central Florida, then upset East Carolina 20-10, winning SU as 10-point underdogs to reach 5-3 on the season. But Temple then lost on a field goal at the buzzer 16-13 to Memphis, fell 30-13 at Penn State, and last week lost at home to Cincinnati 14-6.

The Owls got within eight points in the third quarter last week, but missed a short field that would have pulled them to within five, and never regained momentum.

Temple outgained the Bearcats 267-255 and won time-of-possession by a 33/27 margin, but lost a pair of fumbles and came up just short of covering the spread as a touchdown-underdog.

So in seven games this season against common opponents Temple is 3-4 both SU and ATS, while Tulane is 2-5 SU, 3-4 ATS.

Owls-Wave: A History
The last time these two programs met came in the first-ever Sugar Bowl, back on New Year's Day, 1935. Tulane's Monk Simons scored two long touchdown to rally his Green Wave past Pop Warner's Temple team 20-14.

Now, after going almost 80 years between meetings, these teams are conference rivals.

Owls-Wave Betting Trends
Temple is 4-7 on the totals this season, as Owls games have averaged 43 points.

Tulane is 5-6 on the totals, as Wave games have averaged 47 points.

Owls-Wave Free Pick
Tulane holds an edge on offense, but Temple holds an edge on defense. And in close calls like this we usually go with the better defense. Plus, the Owls still have something to play for. So we like Temple in this spot, for the win and the cover, for our college football picks.
