The SMU Mustangs are one of the worst teams in the country, but that isn’t a big enough reason to simply fade them against a disinterested East Carolina Pirates squad Saturday.

Rock Bottom
SMU is 0-4 SUATS through four games of the season due to getting outscored by a 202-12 combined margin, as it prepares to leave the Lone Star State for the first time.

The Mustangs will be playing their third game since the resignation of former head coach June Jones, which can’t be ignored when looking over the college football odds page, as defensive coordinator Tom Mason fulfills that role.

It’s important to point out that the program has failed to cover the number in its two opportunities as underdogs of 31 or more points since 2012.

Great Start
East Carolina is set to play its first contest as a top-25 team since Sept. 2008, as it picked up back-to-back SU underdog victories over the Virginia Tech Hokies and North Carolina Tar Heels—winning the statistical battle by 463 combined yards in those affairs.

The Pirates have certainly surprised many college football experts with their 3-1 start to the season due to welcoming back just nine starters from a year ago, as they prepare to kick off as favorites of 31 or more points for just the second time since 1992.

Over the last two-plus seasons, the squad is 4-5 SUATS after two or more consecutive wins.

Under Center
Garrett Krstich began the year as the Mustangs’ fourth-string quarterback, which is important to consider when making your Week 6 college football picks, as he’ll likely make his second career start.

Mason has yet to reveal if Krstich will be back under center to start things off at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Saturday afternoon, as he’s completed 50 percent of his passes for 279 yards and no touchdowns.

The Pirates have won 20 of their last 22 games when scoring 30 or more points, with each of those victories coming with senior quarterback Shane Carden under center, as he prepares to make his 29th consecutive start.

East Carolina will be celebrating its Homecoming in this affair, as it looks to improve to 14-2 SU in its last 16 games at this venue, while also taking a 3-2 lead in this American Athletic Conference series.

I’m going to recommend that readers back the Mustangs as one of their Week 6 college football predictions, as the Pirates are 1-4 ATS in their last five games following a bye week.

East Carolina enters a major lull in its schedule, which will allow SMU to stay within this inflated number.
