Our expert capper previews Saturday’s college football contest between Minnesota/TCU. Read his college football betting article pertaining to this matchup, which concludes with an ATS free college football pick.

Big 10 versus Big 12 Clash
The TCU Horned Frogs will host the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas. Kickoff time is slated for 4:00 PM ET, and the game will be televised by Fox Sports1. According to college football odds, TCU is a 14.0 point home favorite, and the posted total is 48.0. These teams haven’t met since 1974.

Gophers off and Running
The Golden Gophers are off to a 2-0 start to the 2014 campaign following last week’s 35-24 home win over Middle Tennessee St. Minnesota jumped out to a 28-3 halftime lead, were never in jeopardy of losing the game, but allowed the Blue Raiders to get a back door cover with a last minute touchdown, and they failed to beat the number as a 17.0 point favorite. They opened the season with a convincing 42-20 win over Eastern Illinois, and did cover the number as a 17.0 point favorite. Minnesota has displayed a potent running attack to start the year, averaging 233 yards rushing per game. This will be the Golden Gophers first road game of the season. Former Northern Illinois coach Jerry Kill has done a nice job since taking over at Minnesota at the onset of the 2011 season. Minnesota is coming off an 8-5 season, and has been to bowl games in each of the last 2-seasons.

TCU Looking to Atone for 2013
TCU suffered their first losing season since 2004 when they went 4-8 a year ago. Head coach Gary Patterson enters his 14th year at TCU and has compiled a stellar 121-43 record during his tenure. The Horned Frogs began the season with a convincing 48-14 win over Samford 2-weeks ago, and covered as a 33.5 point favorite. They held a huge 555-143 total yardage advantage over their FCS opponent. TCU junior quarterback Trevor Boykin was terrific in going 29-of-41 in the air for 320 yards and 2-touchdowns.  The Horned Frogs were off last week, and they’ve gone an outstanding 15-1 ATS in their last 16 home games following a bye week.

Final Analysis
The first thing to address is the uncertain status of Minnesota starting quarterback Mitch Leidner, he’s been listed as questionable with a knee injury sustained during last Saturday’s win. Minnesota has got off to a 2-0 start, but they’ve been far from impressive in doing so. Their first two opponents held a combined 854-to-659 edge in total offense. The Golden Gophers defense has been extremely suspect, and they’re about to face their toughest challenge to date. TCU is definitely not as good as they looked in their opener versus an overmatched FCS school, but they certainly are much better than a season ago. I look for the Horned Frogs defense to be drastically improved this season from the one we saw in 2013. After having off last week, look for Gary Patterson’s club to coming out firing on all cylinders at home on Saturday.
