The Utah Utes and Oregon State Beavers return after their bye weeks to square off in a suddenly important Pac-12 matchup. The Utes are a three-point favorite on the college football odds but can they maintain their standing in the Top 25 and avoid a stumble here?

The Utah Utes Can Win Because…
They have a fantastic rushing attack. When you’re going to go on the road in the Pac-12 – or anywhere in the country – and try to win, you’ll need a steady running game and a strong defense. The Utes have both. Utah ran for 242 yards against UCLA and considering the talent they have in their front seven, that’s quite impressive. The Utes are hard to stop because of multiple threats, including quarterback Devontae Booker and running back Kendal Thompson. What’ll make things harder for Oregon State is the injury to tackle Jason Grimble, who is out.

As for the defense, the Utes lead the country in sacks with 28 even though they’ve played two games less than most schools. They are giving up just 21.4 points per game, which is third in the conference.

The Beavers are a so-so team these days as evidenced by their 35-10 loss to USC. That was their only matchup against a ranked team this season and they failed miserably. Beyond that, they’ve dropped six straight and 12 of their last 14 against Top 25 teams.

The Oregon State Beavers Can Win Because…
This is the Pac-12 and nothing is as it seems. Yes, USC throttled Oregon State but Utah could easily end up with a loss on Thursday. Going to Corvalis is never easy and it wouldn’t be shocking to see the Beavers take care of business and end up in the Top 25 next week themselves.

Utah could very well be overrated. Yes, they beat UCLA but they apparently aren’t that good. And Utah lost at home to Washington State, so how good are they? These two teams are about equal and the Beavers have home-field advantage. On top of that, you’re getting a field goal with them. They’re the better choice for your college football picks.

Outlook & Pick
The Utes opened up as a 1.5-point favorite on the college football odds at The Greek but have since climbed to -3. The moneyline opened at -135 and has slightly climbed to -145. The total has moved around but is back to 53.5, which is where it opened.

Road teams have done great in Pac-12 play, going 14-4 so far but this just smells like an upset in the making. The Beavers are 5-1 ATS in their last six after a bye and that trend should continue. There’s not much between these two teams and while the Utes have the better defense, the Beavers have the better quarterback and home-field advantage. Take them here to not only cover but win outright in a minor upset.
