Boise State makes the long trip east to meet Connecticut this Saturday, and SBR has a preview plus a free college football pick for the 1st-ever meeting between the schools.

Are the Boise State Broncos are on a mission to serve up a plate of crow for yours truly to dine on at the end of the season?

After making the Broncos one of my choices for programs on the decline this past offseason, Boise State made me look good in a season-opening 37-24 setback against Ole Miss.  But the Broncs rebounded last Saturday night at home with a win and cover vs. Colorado State, a game that wasn't as close as the 37-24 final would indicate, and they have a great chance to make it two in row when they visit the Connecticut Huskies.

The noon (ET) kickoff in East Hartford will be carried regionally by either ABC or ESPN2, and numbers were slow to appear on SBR's live college football odds due to some uncertainty surrounding UConn's quarterback situation.  Once they did come out, Boise State was favored by 16 with 49 for the scoreboard hurdle.

Concussions Force Cochran To Give Up Football
The Huskies announced this week that Casey Cochran would have to give up playing football due to a series of concussions over his career.  The 20 year old redshirt sophomore won the starting QB job after some stellar play last year when he led Connecticut to three straight wins to close the 2013 following an oh-&-9 beginning.

Cochran was on the field in UConn's opener, a 35-10 loss at home to BYU as 15.5 point underdogs, completing 17-of-31 passes for 171 yards and one pick.  But he was unable to play a week ago when the Huskies barely survived against FCS Stony Brook of the Colonial Athletics Association.

The Seawolves, 16.5 point 'dogs in the clash, actually had the lead most of the first half against Connecticut, and it took a Deshon Foxx punt return in the third quarter to secure the victory.

Chandler Whitmer started and played the entire game vs. Stony Brook, but was lackluster at best with 15 incompletions among his 27 aerials and a costly fumble in the first half.  Head coach Bob Diaco has named the 5th-year senior as his starter for the foreseeable future, but we won't be surprised to see Tim Boyle get some snaps this week if Whitmer and the Huskies offense can't move the ball against Boise State.

Big 2nd Quarter Leads Broncos To Week 2 Dubya
For a little while last Saturday night on the smurf turf in Boise, the right play was Colorado State and the points.  But then the second quarter started, and it was pretty much all Broncos from that point on.

Bryan Harsin, also in his first season at Boise State like Diaco with UConn, has no concerns at quarterback with Grant Hedrick under center.  The senior out of Oregon had a big night against the Rams, hitting 22 of 33 passes for 352 yards and a couple of scores, the second of which ended a string of 24 unanswered points for Boise State and went to his favorite receiver, Matt Miller (8 rec, 151 yds).

Of course, it's easy for a QB to have success passing when he has a tailback the caliber of Jay Ajayi behind him.  Ajayi ran for 219 yards and a pair of TDs, and also caught a 6-pointer from Hedrick.

The first-ever meeting on the gridiron between the two schools could be a little damp with a 20% shot of a stray shower falling on Rentschler Field.  At the very least, there will not be much sunshine in the area and temps only reaching the low-to-mid 70s during the contest.

I'm not sold on the Broncos covering the spread, even given how poor the Huskies have played.  Instead, my free pick will be on a low-scoring affair in East Hartford this Saturday afternoon.
