Mountain West Conference adversaries collide when top dog San Diego State travels to Utah State on Friday night. Let's see what the college football odds makers are dealing on this matchup and cash a ticket.

San Diego State Aztecs vs Utah State Aggies

Last season the Aztecs throttled the Aggies 48-14 and this season San Diego State sits atop the MWC West division while Utah State dwells in the basement of the MWC Mountain division. Yet both teams looked impressive last week as the Aztecs annihilated San Jose State 42-3, and made winners out of all those who backed the Aztecs as 23-point home favorites in their college football picks. On the flip side, the Aggies handled their business with a 38-20 victory over Fresno State. Unfortunately for their backers, Utah State was installed as 21-point home chalk by the college football odds makers and that impost was a bit too much for them to overcome.

In this matchup, we have one of the most dynamic, if not the most dynamic, rusher in the country in San Diego State's Donnel Pumphrey. The senior sensation has now broken the plane of the end zone on 13 occasions and has 1246 yards to his credit this season. Pumphrey broke Marshall Faulk's school record with 58 rushing and 63 combined TD's throughout his collegiate career in the team’s win over San Jose State when he rushed for a pair of touchdowns and added 135 rushing yards.

So yes, expect SDS to attempt to run all over the Aggies but it should be noted that Utah State is ranked 54th in run defense, allowing 151.6 yards per game. That will most likely not be stout enough to contain the churning Aztecs ground-and-pound attack. As if the SDS offense wasn’t enough, their defense has been outstanding over their last three contests, allowing a combined 13 points over that span.

Utah State’s signal caller Kent Myers has just seven touchdowns on the season which reflect the Aggies’ reliance on their ground game. Unfortunately for them, the Aztecs are ranked 2nd in the nation at stopping the run, surrendering an average of just 93.6 rushing yards per game. I simply don’t know how the Aggies are going to keep pace with a relentless San Diego State rushing attack as they are ill-equipped to come from behind with their passing game. If your chief weapon, rushing, is going to be immobilized by one of the best teams in the nation at stopping the run then the pass is the only option. I don’t like laying points on the road but in this case, I will make an exception.
