Miami (FL) Hurricanes vs. Louisville Cardinals

Saturday, September 19, 2020 – 07:30 PM EDT at Cardinal Stadium

The Miami Hurricanes avoided an upset against UAB to start the 2020 season. With one game to smooth their feathers, they now get to focus on their ACC schedule with a conference opener against Louisville. The Cardinals won their season opener as well, and this will be the only game of Week 3 against two ranked opponents.

Although Miami is ranked above Louisville, NCAAF odds have the Cardinals as the favorite. This is a pivotal game for the Hurricanes as they look to be an underdog pick to compete in the ACC. If they want to upset teams like Clemson and Notre Dame in the ACC, they have to take care of business against Louisville.

It will take many things going right for Miami to win this game. However, an upset is well within the realm of possibility. Here’s what Miami has to do to make it happen.

Miami Must Unlock D’Eriq King

This will be King’s first true test in a Miami uniform, and he needs to be the accelerator for this offense. He is a true dual-threat quarterback, and he needs to impact both facets of the offense.

In their season opener, King scored a passing and a rushing touchdown. Against Louisville, he needs to score at least three touchdowns by himself. While the way they are scored does not matter, he needs to keep the defense honest. If he becomes single-faceted, the defense can cheat and stack the box.

Miami’s whole season will revolve around D’Eriq King’s success, and he has the potential to deliver. His Heisman odds are at +1200, meaning that there is a legitimate chance that he thrives in 2020. If he doesn’t put it all together, the Hurricanes have no chance of pulling off the upset.

The Hurricanes Need to Win the Turnover Battle

With such a small betting line, any one play could sway this game. A big turnover could help Miami pull off the upset. The good news for them is that Louisville had two turnovers against Western Kentucky in their season opener. If the Hurricanes defense can intercept a pass or force a fumble, I like their odds to win this one.

However, there is some bad news for Miami. They were unable to force any turnovers against UAB. They need their defense to step up and make one or two of those game-altering plays.

The secondary has plenty of upperclassmen starting, so watch out for them to bring out the Turnover Chain.

Miami Should Win the Game in the Trenches

This should happen, but it’s a must for the Hurricanes. If they lose the defensive battle up front, they can’t expect anything else to work defensively. The D-line was going to be a strength in 2020, but that changed when Gregory Rousseau opted out of the college football season.

Nesta Jade Silvera is the game-wrecker on the interior of the defensive line. He will make it hard to run inside for the Cardinals, which helps the cause. Watch out for freshman Chantz Williams to try and fill in the absence of Rosseau. He won’t be as consistent as Rousseau, but any sack or tackle for a loss will be a step in the right direction.

Can Miami Pull off the Upset?

This betting line is only 1.5 points. It is completely possible for Miami to win this game. With this close of a line, you might consider just betting on the Hurricanes to win outright. The odds of winning by only one point are very low.

Louisville is only favored because they are the home team. With crowds having minimal impact in 2020, I think that Miami has what it takes to win on the road. With these teams being so close, I tend to lean on the game-changing player. Miami has D’Eriq King, and I believe that he helps overcome any coaching woes.
