In a matchup of two of the weaker teams in college football, the Huskies are a significant betting favorite due to the incompetence of the Falcons defense. Is Northern Illinois worth laying 16 points? See what we think with our NCAAF pick in this matchup.

Bowling Green Falcons vs Northern Illinois HuskiesA Long Season For the Falcons

For a team with just 2 victories to their credit this season, NIU is a significant betting favorite and this is due in part to the 45.1 points per game that the Falcons have allowed.

While both team's defenses have allowed nearly the same amount of yardage, Bowling Green's opponents have converted on their scoring opportunities while the Falcons offense leaves a lot to be desired, averaging 21.4 points per game. Bowling Green is currently on a 6 game losing streak and this is a team that allowed 77 points to Ohio State in their season opener. It has been a tough season to say in the least for the Falcons.

Turnovers Lead To Losses

This is true for all sports and a major reason for their lack of success has been the 20 overall interceptions that Bowling Green quarterbacks James Morgan and James Knapke have thrown this season. That said, Morgan is the lesser of two evils as he's thrown for 335 yards or more in his last 2 games and has also thrown for 8 touchdowns in the same period of time. If Morgan can resist from forcing the issue, he may provide his team with a chance to be competitive in this game as the Huskies haven't found much success this season despite being a 16 point favorite.

With the rushing of Fred Coppet (604 yards, 3 TD's) and the passing game led by wide receiver, Scott Miller (798 yards, 9 TD's), the Falcons have plenty of offense to match up against Norhern Illinois. Cutting down on turnovers and playing better defense are the keys to success for the Falcons and this seems like a tall order.

Beating Up On the Weak?

That isn't necessarily so in this case as the Huskies haven't proven the to be a consistent winner. It would be a stretch, but NIU would have to run the table in an impressive manner to even get a sniff of a bowl game and that seems unlikely. For now, they have an easy opponent in from of them and the Huskies main objective will be to win this game.

Senior quarterback, Anthony Maddie, is getting his real first taste of collegiate football action this season and in 5 games, he's played relatively well. Northern Illinois doesn't possess the pure passing attack that Bowling Green does, but Maddie is a quarterback that's a double threat as he can hit his key targets such as wide receiver, Kenny Golladay (821 yards, 7 TD's) and also run with the football.

Maddie has 3 games of over 100 yards rushing and is coming off of a 44-7 victory in which Northern Illinois dominated Buffalo 44-7. Northern Illinois possesses a well-balanced offensive attack which has been able to convert on scoring opportunities as opposed to Bowling Green, who hasn't been able to "cash in" as much as they would've liked to.

For your college football week 10 pick, look for Northern Illinois to pick up the win at home, but Bowling Green has more than enough weapons on offense to keep this game relatively close.
