Saturday afternoon Pac-12 rivals USC and Arizona will tangle in the desert. Let’s check out this matchup and get on the right side of our college football picks.

USC (3-3 SU, 2-4 ATS) vs. Arizona (2-4 SU, 1-5 ATS) Prediction

If you have been tailing the Wildcats in your college football picks this season then you are undoubtedly unimpressed with this year’s edition. Arizona is a disappointing 2-4 on the season but a dreadful 1-5 ATS which includes their latest failure in last week’s 36-23 loss to Utah as 9 ½ point road underdogs. This is a team whose most impressive outing this season was actually a 35-28 home loss to the currently undefeated Washington Huskies in Week 4 of the college football season.

Southern Cal has been surprisingly mediocre this season but has won their last two contests, comprised of a 41-20 victory over Arizona State and last week edged Colorado at home by the score of 21-17. Freshman quarterback Sam Darnold was superb in those wins as evidenced by his combined passing six touchdowns, in addition to one rushing TD with only one interception for a total of 710 passing yards. Unfortunately for Trojans’ fans, senior running back Justin Davis was injured in the second half of the team’s victory over the Buffalos and it is reported his right ankle sprain will preclude him from this week’s game against the Wildcats.

By the Wildcats head coach Rich Rodriguez’s own admission, his defense has not only been banged up but are “woefully undersized” and were flat out worn down after halftime by a Utah rushing attack that gained 186 of its 210 rushing yards in the second half. But this week they will face a USC offense that has not been able to ground-and-pound the ball with much efficiency. The Trojans are ranked 89th in the nation with an average of 153.2 rushing yards per game and have averaged just 25 points per game (99th) versus an Arizona team that can run, averaging 226.8 rushing yards per game (29th) and put up 28.5 PPG (69th).

I realize freshman QB Sam Darnold has been terrific lately but this is not a team built to blow away the opposition and the Wildcats will be home after grueling road games against UCLA and Utah last week. Let’s not forget that in their last home game three weeks ago they gave Pac-12 top dog Washington a fight as 17-point home underdogs and lost by only a touchdown. Let’s grab the points that the college football odds makers are giving us and back this live pup here.
