Murray State is undefeated but are still underdogs against Austin Peay on Saturday. Should you ride the hot team or is Murray State looking ahead to their matchup against Jacksonville State?
Murray State Racers vs. Austin Peay Governors
Saturday, April 3rd, 2021 – 3:00pm EST at Roy Stewart Stadium
The Murray State Racers continue to impress and have now started the season 5-0 after defeating Eastern Illinois 41-27. The Racers have been rushing the ball at a high rate, totaling 814 yards in five games. They’re also scoring 30 points per game behind quarterback Preston Rice who has thrown six touchdowns and four interceptions and completed just 48.2 percent of his attempts. However, Rice has helped on the ground with 42 rushes for 191 yards, averaging 4.5 yards per carry and has scored four times.
Freshman running back Damonta Witherspoon has been getting the bulk of carries averaging 4.6 yards per carry with 83 rushes for 379 yards. He’s got four touchdowns to show for it in five games. Defensively, Murray State is allowing just 20.4 points per game and 314 yards per game. They’ve scored 15 touchdowns and have only allowed nine on the season with just two games left in the regular season.
Murray State won’t want to look ahead as their next game is against a highly regarded and high seeded Jacksonville State team that is currently ranked as well. Although Austin Peay is 3-5, they’re still third in the Ohio Valley conference with a 3-2 conference record. The Governors have played eight games so they’ve been consistently playing games, averaging 330 yards per game this season behind Draylen Ellis, the freshman quarterback who has completed just under 50 percent of passes for 1043 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also has four interceptions and has played five games this season.
Still, Austin Peay has struggled to score as they’re averaging just 22.6 points per game this season while allowing 33.8 points per game this season. The Governors have allowed 362.4 yards per game and 33 touchdowns on the season along with 11 field goals. They’ve been bad on defense and with a surging hot rushing attack from Murray State coming on the road, they’ll have their hands full.
Murray State might look ahead to their next game. Or they can continue their dominance against lower competition and stay ranked in the FCS for another week before they meet up with Jacksonville State in what will be a big Ohio Valley game that will decide plenty.
For now, Murray State has been scoring at a high pace. In their last three games, they’ve scored 36, 35, and 41. That won’t stop against a poor defense in Austin Peay.
Therefore, for my NCAAF picks, I’ll take the points with Murray State on the road. They’re not getting the support that they should be this season. They’ve feasted against poor competition but still have score a high amount of points and will take on a poor defense that should allow for more points to be scored.
