Our NCAAF handicapper, Mark Lathrop, looks to his home state for wagering value as one of the top defenses in the country faces a terrible offense in Week 2.

2018 NCAAF Record: 5-1, +7.46u
*Note: Record includes official Twitter selections (@mlathrop3)

Connecticut Huskies (0-1 SU) at Boise State Broncos (1-0 SU)

Saturday, 10:15 p.m. ET (ESPNU)

Free NCAAF Pick: Boise State -31

Best Line Offered: 5Dimes

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3453258, "sportsbooksIds":[19,1275,1252,169,999996], "LineTypeId":1, "PeriodTypeId":1}[/]

Boise State’s Week 1 game couldn’t have gone better, and the fact is the Broncos hadn’t scored that many points (56) in any road opener in their program’s history. The Broncos got out to a hot start against Troy, going up 35-7 at half, while senior quarterback Brett Rypien looked cool and collected. He went 20-for-28 for 305 yards and 4 touchdowns with an average completion of 10.9 yards. Rypien will have an even easier matchup against the Connecticut Huskies, who were nearly dead last in passing defense in 2017 and are starting freshmen and sophomores across their secondary. They will be going through growing pains this year and aren’t scheduled to be competitive until next season.

As expected, the Boise State defense was great in Week 1, even though they gave up a high passing completion rate against Troy. A combination of Troy QBs completed 24 of 34 passes, but were also sacked 5 times and intercepted once. Completion rate was one of the ‘weaknesses for the 2017 Boise State defense too, but every other metric of their defense was great last year and they return every significant player except for NFL draftee Leighton Vander Esch. The Broncos will face a Huskies team that has a terrible offensive line and can’t run the ball. They will be able to take chances and be aggressive.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

The Broncos have cracked the Top 20!

#️⃣2️⃣0️⃣ in the @AP_Top25
#️⃣1️⃣9️⃣ in the @usatodaysports Amway Coaches Poll#BleedBlue pic.twitter.com/ygHYVLoKFj
— Boise State Football (@BroncoSportsFB) September 4, 2018
\n\n"}[/]

UConn’s offense can be accurately described as one-dimensional. Senior quarterback David Pinell gained 423 of their 486 yards by passing or running the ball in their Week 1 matchup against UCF. He’s basically the only threat this offense has going, and one of the top defenses in the league at home should be able to feast on the opportunity to defend him.

Obviously, Boise State deserves to be favored heavily in this game, but with a line of 31 points it is tempting to take the underdog. Don’t. Boise State has one common opponent with their competition for a mid-major making a New Year’s bowl game this year, and that is with UCF and UConn. UCF beat UConn by 39 points in Week 1, and Boise State might not let up the gas until they eclipse that mark. Either way, UConn will be hard pressed to score more than 17 points as Boise State’s defense is better than UCF’s. I think the Broncos score 60 in their home opener and cover the 31 points with ease. With the Huskies starting at 10:15 p.m. ET they might be competitive early and fade hard late in the game as well.
