Iowa State Cyclones vs. Kansas State Wildcats

Saturday, October 16, 2021 - 07:30 PM EDT at Bill Snyder Family Stadium

Bill Snyder Family Stadium The Iowa State Cyclones are 3-2 on the year with two losses to Iowa and Baylor. Those losses don’t look nearly as bad now, but those losses have kicked the Cyclones out of the Top 25, at least for now.Meanwhile, Kansas State started the season 3-0 but have lost two straight to Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. Last week, both of these teams were on a bye week and given an extra week to prepare for this matchup. Iowa State is led by senior quarterback Brock Purdy who has thrown for 1,133 yards and eight touchdowns. He’s also thrown four interceptions but has completed 71.2 percent of passes.

The Cyclones have plenty of talent around Purdy but don’t have the best protection for Purdy when it comes to the offensive line. Running back Breece Hall has rushed for eight touchdowns on 104 attempts and 551 yards. As an offense, they’re averaging 442 yards per game and 33.8 points per game. That’ll usually get the job done with the defense that the Cyclones have.

On defense, the Cyclones are limited teams to 233.2 yards per game with just 143.2 yards passing and 90 yards rushing per game. The defense has been elite at stopping the run and have been above average everywhere else on the defensive end, limiting teams to just 15.6 points per game.

Meanwhile, Kansas State added quarterback Skylar Thompson back into the lineup on October 2nd against Oklahoma. The starting quarterback had been injured previously but is back and looked solid in his return. Against the Sooners, Thompson threw for 320 yards on 29-for-41 with three touchdowns and just one sack.

However, on the defensive end, Kansas State will struggle to stop the run and while the pass rush has been effective, the coverage has not been.

Prediction

There’s a couple of ways to beat this Kansas State defense. They’ve been poor against the run, despite what you see in the boxscore. They’ve also been dreadful in coverage and have missed plenty of tackles in the open field.

The Cyclones are putting together some big games offensively and are led by two upperclassmen in Purdy and Hall. It’s a great match for the Cyclones and a win against Kansas State, on the road, might help Iowa State return to the Top 25.

For my college football pick, I won’t discredit Thompson and Kansas State and believe there’s a chance for the Wildcats to put up more than 15 points in this game against Iowa State. It’s just that the Kansas State defense isn’t as great as the boxscore shares. They’re great on the defensive line but they might allow a couple of big plays in this game.NCAAF Pick: Iowa State -6.5 (-110)
