Boston College closed strong while the Iowa Hawkeyes lost two of their final three games, and we have a free college football pick for their clash at the Pinstripe Bowl.

The expansion of the number of bowl games is not without its critics who argue earning a trip to the postseason doesn’t mean what it used to before the schedule became bloated. One uptick, however, is it gives us an increased opportunity to see matchups that we’ve never seen before, like the Iowa Hawkeyes taking on the Boston College Eagles in this year’s Pinstripe Bowl. And really, can there ever be too much college football?

Set for a 5:15 PM (ET) kickoff in the Bronx on December 27, the Big Ten/ACC battle finds Iowa giving up 3 at BetOnline with suggestions this could dip to -2½ along the way. One of the lower totals in the bowl lineup, bettors have options from 45-46½ when playing the scoreboard.

BC Making 26th Bowl Trip

Following a slow start that saw the Eagles lose four of their first six and fail to cover the first three games, they rebounded to win five of their final six and go 8-0-1 against the spread from late-September on. Senior Darius Wade came off the bench for injured freshman quarterback Anthony Brown in the final two contests to direct wins at UConn and Syracuse, completing 16-of-20 for a career high 248 yards in the 42-14 thumping of the Orange in the season finale.

This is BC’s second consecutive bowl trip, and fourth time to earn an invite in Steve Addazio’s five seasons running the show. The Eagles were here in the Bronx three years ago as 3 point chalk on the NCAA football odds, but fell in overtime to Penn State, 31-30.

Season of Highs & Lows For Hawkeyes

Iowa is making its 5th-straight bowl appearance, and 15th under Kirk Ferentz who just completed his 19th season in Iowa City. The year included a couple of highs for the Hawkeyes who pulled off a thrilling overtime win at rival Iowa State early and routing then-No. 6 Ohio State by a 55-24 count as 21-point underdogs. But they also fell short of another big upset when Penn State won on the final play of a September home game, along with a 24-15 upset defeat to Purdue at Kinnick Stadium.

Sophomore Nathan Stanley wasn’t spectacular at QB, but still directed an effective passing game for the Hawkeyes. What hurt them was an inconsistent ground game, and the good news is they’ll be facing a BC defense that ranked 102nd allowing close to 200 yards per game. Bettors are advised to check the weather with the long-term forecast calling for rain and snow just after Christmas in the Big Apple. My free college football pick is on the Big Ten rep.
