Find out why our NCAAF handicappers are looking to the spread with their college football picks in this weekend's matchup between the Indiana Hoosiers and the Michigan State Spartans.

The Michigan State Spartans and Indiana Hoosiers both picked up wins in last week’s NCAAF action, cashing for our sports picks with outright victories as short dogs. Saturday afternoon’s card has the rivals clashing in an early kickoff, with the Spartans returning home to East Lansing.

Take a look at SBR's College Football Picks: Opening Odds Report for Week 7.

Spartans, Cook hold off Iowa

Michigan State held on for last week’s 26-14 road triumph over the Iowa Hawkeyes, controlling the ball for 37 minutes of possession. Spartans quarterback Connor Cook threw for a season-high 277 yards, finding wide outs Macgarrett Kings and Bennie Fowler for one touchdown each.

Michigan State’s Jeremy Langford and Delton Williams combined for 75 rushing yards on 23 carries, while the Spartans offense was held to a 6-for-19 mark in third-down conversions. The Spartans ended the matchup with 16 unanswered points, including three of the day’s four field goals from placekicker Michael Geiger.

Spartans senior Darqueze Dennard grabbed two interceptions, while his mates held Iowa to a tight 264 total yards. Michigan State’s late scoring surge lifted the contest’s combined 40 points above the ‘total’ of 37, making the OVER 2-1 in the team’s last three duels.

Hoosiers, Sudfield pull away

Indiana collected as a 3 ½-point home dog on the same afternoon, topping the Penn State Nittany Lions, 44-24. The Hoosiers notched a 31-10 run through the contest’s final 24 minutes, including a pair of rushing touchdowns from sophomore Tre Roberson.

Hoosiers quarterback Nate Sudfield completed 23-of-38 passes, including a 36-yard touchdown strike to wide out Kofi Hughes. Indiana’s Cody Latimer broke the century mark for a third straight game, finishing with 140 receiving yards on nine catches.

The Hoosiers’ defense allowed 410 total yards in Penn State’s 35 minutes of possession, with 340 coming through the air. Both squads were flagged for five penalties each (62 yards), while the duel’s combined 68 points stretched OVER the closing ‘total’ of 66 ½.

Back the Spartans as home ‘chalk’

College football odds opened Michigan State as a 10-point home favorite, with early wagers on Indiana dropping the number a ‘hook’ to 9 ½. The ‘total’ was first set at 52 ½, remaining unchanged after mixed betting.

I am laying the points here with Michigan State, adding Mark Dantonio’s troops to my week’s card of college football picks.

Michigan State held foes to 12 PPG in its first three home contests, including a 55-17 victory over the Youngstown State Penguins as a 22 ½-point favorite. The Spartans have cashed at 4-1 ATS in their last five meetings in East Lansing with Indiana, piling in 51 PPG through the span’s most recent three affairs.

Indiana has had its signs of octane this year, but went a subpar 2-3 ATS in its final five road dates last season. Sudfield and Co.have a 1-4 spread record in their last five contests that followed a victory, while going 0-4 ATS through their last four spots on grass.

Look for Indiana to be handed another losing ticket, with the Spartans notching their fifth double-digit win of the season here.
