The first game of the college football season kicks off in Sydney, Australia of all places. Join expert capper as he seeks the betting edge surrounding this exciting match.

A couple years ago, Australia attempted to get in the bowl game lineup, but could not put the right package together to satisfy everyone and this, for now, is the next best alternative.

For Hawai'i and new coach Nick Rolovich, the insane journey begins, playing in the land down under tonight in the states and the following Saturday in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

What should you be looking at for college football picks? Let's consider the possibilities.

Why Golden Bears Cover
California had their first winning season at 8-5 for the first time since 2011, but could struggle to reach that level again, with only nine starters returning. Coach Sonny Dykes is at least covered at quarterback with graduate transfer Davis Webb from Texas Tech. How quickly he and all brand new receiving group come together will be important.

Look for Cal to be a little more balanced at least in pass/run ratio, adjusting to new players and looking to exploit weaknesses in the Hawai'i defense, which are at all three levels, after surrendering 35.6 points a game a season ago.

Why Rainbow Warriors Cover
Though it is the opener, it is not like California is going to be all fired up for a team they understand they can beat. Coach Rolovich understands the Hawai'i program having played as quarterback and later coaching there. With his recent experience at Nevada, the Rainbow Warriors have a terrific running back in Paul Harris, who they can use to move the chain and eat the clock to hide their defense and keep Cal off the field.

If Hawai'i has success doing this and can force a few three and outs, they can gain confidence as well as frustrate Dykes squad.

What is the Total Play?
At Intertops, the total opened at 63 and stayed there, thus the number appears correct. Both teams will have success is moving the pigskin, but execution will be largest determining factor on which way the total goes.

If both teams ending up settling for field goals instead of touchdowns once they reach the opponents 35-yard line, then a lower score is possible. But if there are communication breakdowns in the secondary's, we could be seeing big plays which changes the dynamics of the scoring.

Expect a touchdown with under seven minutes remaining to push the total to an OVER and Cal moves to 17-6 OVER the first two weeks of the season.

Odds and Outcome
The odds to start for this contest had California at -22 or -22.5 at most sportsbooks and this has since come down to -20.5. While 21 is not a key number is normal sense, with the current figure, it adds value if the Bears are selection.

While Cal has many flaws, they can score against an inferior opponent and with Hawaii putting in new systems on both sides of the ball, the Bears can exploit them. Expect Cal to tally fourth quarter touchdown putting them past the number and defense makes that hold up as they win by 25.
