Both the Hokies and Wolfpack ended up on the losing side last week, but one of these teams will get back on track this Friday. What's the best road to take with our college football picks?

Odds Overview
Friday night's game should be extremely competitive, and one look over the college football odds would suggest the same. Most of the top sportsbooks have the line at a straight PK, while others have the visiting Wolfpack favored by a single point. Either way, we should be expecting this one to come down to the wire.

Points are also likely to be hard to come by, if the posted total of 50 points is anything to go by. Generally speaking, that's a low O/U in the realm of college football.

Virginia Tech Hokies
Spirits were high for the Hokies after consecutive blowout wins over Furman (42-3) and then Purdue (51-24, on the road no less), but they've hit a wall over the last couple of weeks. They've fallen to ECU on the road (35-28) and then lost by at home to Pittsburgh last Saturday, thus dropping to 2-3 overall on the year.

Just like their record, the statistics show an underwhelming start to the season for Virginia Tech. The Hokies rank 97th in the nation, scoring 31 points per game, and can be found in 69th on the defensive end, surrendering 24.2 points a game. On an individual level, dual-threat QB Brenden Motley has accounted for 10 total touchdowns so far, while WR Isaiah Ford has been the top target in the passing game, reeling in 24 receptions for 382 yards and three scores. That being said, the offense was a total letdown this past weekend in what was a very winnable home encounter with the Panthers.

Despite the poor start, Virginia Tech has at least played some top-level competition already, so they should be well-prepared for this visit of the Wolfpack. They've already faced the #1-ranked team in the nation in Ohio State along with solid programs like Pitt, ECU and Purdue.

NC State Wolfpack
The Wolfpack couldn't have asked for a much better start to their season, as they won four straight games, each win coming by at least 24 points.

We figured the good times weren't going to last forever, though, and indeed we watched on as NC State lost 20-13 at home to Louisville last week. A Wolfpack offense that had been having incredible success was essentially shut down by the Cardinals; despite their three best skill positions players accounting for a touchdown in QB Jacoby Brissett (who's still yet to have thrown an interception), RB Matthew Dayes and "TE" Jaylen Samuels, they just couldn't make enough plays in front of their home crowd to notch the win.

Now NC State will try to move on back out on the road, where they've beaten Old Dominion (38-14) and South Alabama (63-13) comfortably. There is obviously going to be a step-up in competition levels here, however, and the Wolfpack are in real danger of suffering a second straight setback.

Betting Analysis
Though the Hokies have already lost a few times this season, they've faced a much more difficult schedule than the Wolfpack, and that should have them prepared for Friday's game.

Home-field advantage never hurts either, and we know Tech will be chomping at the bit to get back on the winning side following such close losses in their last two matchups. Motivation, and a little desperation, will be there for the Hokies on their own turf this week.

So, as we finalize our college football picks for Week 6 of the season, we've ultimately decided to put our faith in Tech to overcome a NC State team that's only been tested once this season (and lost). Back the Hokies.
