Old foes prepare for their 88th collision in this year’s matchup between the ‘Horns and Horned Frogs, and TCU is TD chalk on the NCAA football odds against Texas.

A shot at an undefeated season just came to an end for the TCU Horned Frogs, and a pretty successful betting trend has been to fade a team after it loses its first game deep into a schedule. Gary Patterson and his Frogs might not fit the criteria very well, however, as they prepare for a matchup against everyone’s rival in Texas and beyond, the Longhorns.

The 88th matchup in the rivalry between Texas and TCU is getting prime-time honors from the worldwide leader in sports, kickoff in Ft. Worth coming at 7:15 PM (ET). Most outlets are currently juicing a Longhorns +7 wager, but Heritage has -6½ chalk on the Horned Frogs. Totals presently range from 46 to 47 in what is expected to be a battle of defensive wills.

Excellent Defensive Front 7’s Will Set Tone For This One

Let’s give Tom Herman and Texas credit for treading water at 4-4 to this point. The Longhorns are about to play their fourth team that either held a top 10 ranking when the matchups took place, or currently is a top 10 squad. Granted, they didn’t win any of the previous three, but they covered each one with the setbacks to USC, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma by 11 points combined. Texas has the 12th-ranked defense against the run, one reason why the ‘Horns have sent ‘under’ bettors back to the pay window six times in eight tries.

Losing as 7 point chalk on the NCAA football odds at Iowa State last week did put a big bruise on the TCU season, but the Horned Frogs didn’t really suffer that badly in the first CFP rankings, falling from what would’ve been a No. 3 slot with a win to No. 8. Patterson enjoys having the 3rd-ranked defense against the run – TCU 2-5 O/U in 2017 – and has a very healthy squad that still pretty much enjoys controlling its own destiny entering this game.

Rivalry Trends, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

Thanks mostly to a 24-game win streak in the series from the late 60s into the 90s, Texas has a 62-24-1 stranglehold over the Cowtown Christians. It was even more lopsided before the Frogs getting an invite into the Big 12, TCU winning 4-of-5 and routing the Longhorns the last three years. Three of the Horned Frogs’ four Big 12 triumphs came in Austin, which was unheard of back in the good ol’ SWC days. Rounding the score up a tad on Texas the last three meetings leaves TCU with a 43-9 average, and the ‘under’ has cashed 4-of-5 conference clashes.

The thermometer should start in the high-70s, maybe even low-80s under partly cloudy skies, and there could be a kicking advantage with a 10-15 mph blow from the south at Amon Carter Stadium. Freshman Sam Ehlinger is expected back for Texas to add at least a little extra oomph to that offense, one reason why my free college football pick is a money line upset.
