Georgia Southern had the worst point differential (-36) among all bowl-eligible teams from the Sun Belt. The Eagles needed a 51-48 double-overtime victory in its season finale against Appalachian State to become bowl eligible, as a three-game losing streak put that eligibility in jeopardy.

Buffalo eked out a one-point victory over Akron in its regular-season finale to earn bowl eligibility. Before that, it was a season of streaks for the Bulls, who started 0-3, then won five straight before three consecutive losses had their record at 5-6.

Georgia Southern quarterback Kyle Vantrease is very familiar with Buffalo and its coaching staff, starting 25 games for the school (10 for second-year head coach Maurice Linguist) before transferring. That familiarity is one reason we are backing the Eagles, as Vantrease can provide the coaching staff with valuable intel on the opposition’s schemes. 

Georgia Southern has proven it can beat high-level competition, owning wins over Nebraska and Sun Belt East division champion James Madison. 

Entering this year, MAC teams were 10-24 straight up (16-16-2 against the spread) in bowl games over the previous six seasons. Buffalo struggled without two of its three leading rushers (Ron Cook Jr. and Al-Jay Henderson) in its finale against Akron, totaling 27 yards on 26 carries. With its backfield not likely full strength for this game, the Bulls’ passing attack (fourth in yards, sixth in completion percentage in the MAC) will not keep pace with the Eagles’ potent offense.
