Chance for Newcomers on National Television
The Georgia Southern Eagles host the Appalachian St. Mountaineers on Friday at Allen E. Paulson Stadium. The game will be televised by ESPNU with the opening kickoff slated for 7:30 PM ET. According to college football odds, Georgia Southern is a 15.0 point home favorite. This is the first full season for both of these schools at the major college level, both previously having a rich history over the years competing at the FCS level, or what was formerly known as Division 1A.

Mountaineers Squander a Golden Opportunity
Appalachian St. missed out on a chance to improve to 2-1 on the season, losing a heartbreaker 21-20 this past Saturday at Southern Mississippi. They outgained Southern Miss in that game 455-329 but were hampered by 3 turnovers. Their only win in their first 3-games was a 66-0 blowout over Campbell who’s considered to be an FCS team. They opened the year at the “Big House” in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and were hammered 52-14 by the Wolverines.

Proving the Belong with the Big Boys
Georgia Southern has surely faced better competition so far this season in comparison to Appalachian St. They gave North Carolina State all they can handle in their season opener, losing 24-23 in Raleigh, North Carolina, and covered easily as a 20.5 point underdog. They also played Georgia Tech on the road, and were right there until the end in a 42-38 loss, and had no issues covering as a 15.5 point underdog. This past Saturday, they were once again on the road in a game versus South Alabama, and were clearly the better team in a 28-6 win, covering with no trouble as a 1.5 point favorite. Refreshing college football fans memory banks, this is the same team they went into “The Swamp” in Gainesville last season, and knocked off the Florida Gators. The Eagles run a triple option offense, average 366-yards per game rushing, and are getting a tremendous 7.7 yards per attempt.

Final Analysis
Georgia Southern will outclass Appalachian St. in this contest. The Eagles could very well be 4-0 right now, allowing late touchdowns in each of their two losses versus ACC opponents on the road. They rely heavily on their running game, but have shown they’re very capable of being effective with their passing attack when deemed necessary. FOr this reason I am willing to back a Georgia Southern cover with my college football picks in this situation
