Miami, FL vs. Washington St. (-3/62) 2:00 ET CBS
ACC representative Miami, FL meets PAC 10 representative Washington St. on Saturday, December 26th in the long-established Sun Bowl in El Paso, TX. In the past, this contest has often been subject to cruel temperatures and high winds on the border town of El Paso. But with no official forecast yet available, this conclusion assumes favorable weather conditions. Should that be the case, this game has all the makings of a high-scoring affair. With formerly-injured Washington St. QB Falk returning from his concussion and Miami, FL QB Kaaya emerging as a downfield threat, it should be flying footballs in El Paso.

Miami (FL) Hurricanes
It has been a turbulent season for Miami football. They began the year with 5th year HC Al Golden at the helm. But his seat grew hotter by the week! Early October losses at Cincinnati (23-34) and rival Florida St. (24-29) dropped the Canes to 3-2 SU ATS. But the FCB (Final Crushing Blow) came with a (58-0) home whitewash at the hands of No.1 Clemson. With that defeat, the Miami powers that be pulled the plug on Golden and replaced him with interim HC Larry Scott. At the conclusion of the season, it was announced that Miami hired former Georgia HC Richt, who was fired after 15 years as mentor of the Bulldogs. This is a great hire for Miami who brings a quality coach, and alumnus, back to his S. Florida home. With Richt at the controls, Hurricane fortunes may return to the expectations of early in this millennium.

Washington State Cougars
?It was a turnaround season for Washington St. under 4th year HC Leach. As one of the creators of the “Air Raid” offense, Leach had led an underachieving Cougar team to a 12-25 SU record in his first 3 seasons. When Washington St. lost their opener to regional rival Portland St. (24-17) (as -31), rumblings of the imminent ouster of Leach began to surface. But the Cougars rallied behind their embattled coach to beat Rutgers and Wyoming before going 6-3 SU in the rugged PAC 12. That included narrow losses of 6 points to California and 2 points to Stanford, before a season-ending, Apple Cup loss to rival Washington. Key to that result was that they missed QB Falk (concussion, expected to return for this game), who led the team to the nation’s most prolific passing attack. Running the Air Raid offense to near perfection, QB Falk authored a season in which the Cougars averaged 397 PYPG (the best mark in the NCAA). This is actually a ball-control passing offense that relies on precision for its effectiveness. Expect HC Leach to devise a winning game plan in a game where he will have 4 weeks to prepare. And expect Falk to carry it out with great effectiveness!

In looking to perform well in their audition for new HC Richt, I expect equal positive motivation from Miami, Fl. In a game which may tax the abilities of the scoreboard operator, I invite you to put the college football odds in your favor and back my college football pick on OVER 62 in this year’s Sun Bowl Game.
