Nebraska finds itself in the conversation for making the playoffs, but has tests much greater than Purdue coming up in recent weeks. Check out our College Football Pick for week 8 clash.

2016 College Football Record: 19-21-2, -4.20 Units

A team with a lethal rushing attack meets up with a team having that exact same weakness when the Purdue Boilermakers travel to play the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Week 8 College Football action. The Cornhuskers are undefeated on the season, and have their highest ranking at 8th in the FBS since 2011. Purdue couldn’t be in a more opposite situation, coming off of a blowout loss to Indiana that led to the firing of their head coach, Darrell Hazell. Gerad Parker, previously the wide receivers coach, was named as Hazell’s replacement for the rest of the season.

The obvious mismatch on paper has led to bookmakers instilling the Cornhuskers as heavy 24-point home favorites. It’s the second game in Lincoln in a row against Purdue that the Cornhuskers have been favored by more than 21 points. In 2014, Nebraska was favored by 21.5 points while winning by 21 – losing on a nasty hook. Last year was a different story at Purdue, and a reason why the Cornhuskers shouldn’t look past the Boilermakers, as Nebraska was upset 55-45 on the road as 7.5-point favorites across the odds board.

So, just how big of a mismatch is the Nebraska running game on paper against Purdue? Well, the Cornhuskers are ranked 27th in the nation at averaging 220.5 yards per game, while the Boilermakers are ranked 124th out of 128 teams in rushing defense, and have allowed more than 300 rushing yards in their last 4 conference games. I don’t think putting their wide receiver coach in charge is going to change that within the week. Even though Nebraska does have some injuries to their offensive line, with Tommy Armstrong Jr. being a little hobbled it just makes it more likely that they will try to pound the ball on the ground.

On the other hand, Purdue is missing two of their starting defensive backs, who are absent for personal conduct reasons. That may tempt Nebraska to try to take advantage of that weakness as well.

With all of the things pointing Nebraska’s way this has the essence of a trap game, especially with road dates against Wisconsin and Ohio State looming in the next two weeks. But I believe that the loss last year against Purdue probably cures them of that. The Nebraska defense will also have something to say as well, as they’ve been the most consistent squad on the team this year, allowing only 18.3 points per game. Take the Cornhuskers to win this game going away, and lay the 24 points at home against Purdue as one of your Week 7 College Football picks.
