Big Ten action features the undefeated Cornhuskers traveling to Wisconsin to take on the Badgers on Saturday night. Let’s analyze this matchup and cash a ticket in our college football picks.

Nebraska (7-0 SU, 4-2-1 ATS) vs. Wisconsin (5-2 SU, 6-1 ATS) Prediction

Swinger’s 2016 College Football Record: 7-11 ATS

The Cornhuskers dispatched Purdue last week 27-14 at home and kept their perfect record intact. Yet it was a disappointing margin of victory for all those who included Nebraska in their college football picks as the oddsmakers installed the home team as 24 ½ -point home chalk. After trailing 14-10 at the half, the Huskers drew away to the 13-point victory courtesy of a pair of touchdowns (one rushing, one passing) and 252 yards passing by quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr...

Nebraska now holds their best record after their first seven games since 2001 but the naysayers, and there are many, would point out that their only real competition came in their third week of play against then 22nd ranked Oregon, in which the Cornhuskers rallied late in the fourth quarter to prevail 35-32. Yet, we now know that the Ducks have fallen precipitously out of the top 25 and stand with a 2-5 record as Week 8 approaches.

Wisconsin opened up the season by rattling off four consecutive wins before dropping two straight to powerhouses Michigan and Ohio State. Last week they visited Iowa as 3 ½ point road favorites and came away with a 17-9 victory. Corey Clement ran for 134, including a one-yard TD, while quarterback Alex Hornibrook tossed for 197 yards. However, it was the Badgers’ defense that stood tall and held the Hawkeyes to just 83 rushing yards and no touchdowns.

Last season the Badgers edged the Cornhuskers 23-21 as 2 ½ point road favorites but this season the venue shifts, and the college football odds makers are installing 5-2 Wisconsin as 8 ½ to 9 point home chalk depending upon where you shop. The key here is defense. Ranked 4th in the nation, Wisconsin has allowed just 14.7 points per game while the Huskers rank 14th surrendering 17.7 PPG. But though the Badgers may be strong on defense, their offense is ranked 101st in the nation, scoring an average of 24.3 PPG while Nebraska tallies 34.1, good for 40th in the nation.

I realize that Nebraska has a target on their collective backs with a perfect record against less than ideal competition. However, this looks more like a grind-it-out affair between two very good defenses. That being the case, give me the nine-point head start and I am one happy camper.
