It’s a matchup that could get lost beneath the top of the Week-1 marquee but hasn’t escaped our attention and we have a free NCAA football pick as Utah State travels to Wisconsin.

Utah State Aggies vs. Wisconson Badgers

Some have called the Utah State Aggies the biggest mystery in the Mountain West this year. Some of the unknown might be cleared up when they travel to Madison for a Week 1 meeting with the Wisconsin Badgers of the Big Ten. ESPN has the contest at Camp Randall Stadium on Friday beginning at 9 PM (ET), and the sports books don’t see much mystery to this outcome with Wisconsin favored by nearly two touchdowns. 5Dimes started the Badgers -29½, that spread since dropping to 27 while the total has risen from 49 to 52.

It’s the third gridiron meeting between the two schools, both the previous two taking place in Madison. Utah State posted a 20-0 whitewashing in 1968, Wisconsin evening things up five years ago with a 16-14 decision that closed with the Badgers laying 14½ on the college football odds.

New Faces Manning Utat State Trenches
Following up on a disappointing 3-9 campaign that saw a 6-year bowl run halted, the feeling is it won’t get much better for Matt Wells & Co. Maybe it’s a good thing the Aggies lost almost two-thirds of their starters, and it’s inexperience behind Utah State’s 4.5 win total on the NCAA football futures odds.

A big chunk of the depth chart movement cam on the offensive line, one of the team’s strengths the past few years, as four starters left. Senior and 3-year letterman Kent Myers is back and he’ll have his top target returning in Ron’quavion Tarver, plus speedy downhill threat Jaren Colston-Green, So, if the line gels, Utah State could have quick-strike capability. The defense is also dealing with losses up front with five of the Front 7 moving on.

Wisconsin Might Have Deepest Backfield Among Power 5
Expectations are much higher in Madison where the Badgers have been floated 10-10½ on win totals and 5/1 to win the Big Ten behind Ohio State (5/4), Michigan (2/1) and Penn State (4/1). Paul Chryst finds 15 returning starters from a team that went 11-3 with a New Year’s Six bowl victory over the 2016 Cinderella story, Western Michigan.

Sophomore Alex Hornibrook is back under center and needs to produce in order to keep from losing the job to true freshman Jack Coan. Whoever’s there has top wide out Jazz Peavy and tight end Troy Fumagalli returning to the aerial attack. The running game will again be featured with Bradrick Shaw getting first chance to impress. Chryst will rotate three backs early, so don’t go to sleep on Pitt transfer Craig James or true freshman Johnathan Taylor.

If there is any real mystery for Wisconsin, it’s can the defense remain consistent with their third coordinator in as many seasons. I believe that unit can. and will hand the offense several short-field drives Friday night under the Camp Randall lights. I’m on Wisconsin for my free college football.

My Free College Football Pick: Wisconsin -27 at 5Dimes (-115)

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3187650, "sportsbooksIds":[169,19,139,238,1096], "LineTypeId":1, "PeriodTypeId":1 }[/]
