Rice (-8) vs. N. Texas 2:30 ET
The Rice Owls travel to N. Texas this Saturday afternoon for a 2:30 ET start at Apogee Stadium. In a pair of contests this year, Rice was dominant in their “extra” game against Wagner to start the season. They won 56-16 as 27 point home favorite with a 401-86 overland edge. In Game 2, Rice unfortunately caught the Texas Longhorns after their embarrassing loss to Notre Dame the previous week. The 42-28 final, favoring Texas, was more of a function of a (+4) net TO margin than play at the line of scrimmage. For, Rice outrushed and out passed the host Longhorns by a combined margin of 462-277, as a member of the 200 yard offensive club. The Owls got their just reward for that excellence by scoring the final 2 TDs of the game to come inside the 15 point impost.
Further north of Austin, the Mean Green was playing its first game of the season at SMU. It was bit of a no-contest, as an SMU team who was 1-11 SU last season, outrushed N. Texas 273-112, had a 444-240 total yardage edge and a dominating 31-13 victory. Clearly these teams are headed in opposite directions. An indication of that came last season when these teams played in Houston at Rice Stadium. The Owls won that game 41-21 as 16 point home chalk with a 421-216 yardage edge.
All these results are an indication that there are real problems in Denton, Texas. Look no further than the fact that under 5th year HC McCarney, the not-so Mean went from 9-4 SU, 10-3 ATS in 2013 to 4-8 SU, 3-8 ATS in 2014. Look for the downward spiral to continue. Consider the following, this is a team bereft at the signal caller position, struggling on the offensive line and featuring 47 walk-on players and 36 non-scholarship kids.
Under 9th year Rice HC Bailiff, the Owls will soar to victory here. The Rice loss to Texas last week sets up a situation that has seen Rice go 8-4 ATS off a loss the previous 3 seasons, part of a 27-14 ATS run 3+Y. Last year, Rice won this game (41-21) with a 421-216 yardage edge. Though they have just 10 RS, they were good enough to outgain Texas last week 462-277. Owls are my PICK to soar to an easy victory in what will look like a gift in the near weeks ahead! Join me tonight, as we put the College Football Odds in our favor with Rice minus the points!
