Their SEC Championship hopes still alive, the NCAA football odds favor the Auburn Tigers this Saturday when they travel to face the Ole Miss Rebels. Our expert capper has the cashing pick.

Season: 16-18-2 (-3.10)

Have the Auburn Tigers played themselves into position to possibly become the first 2-loss team to make the College Football Playoffs?

A lot certainly has to go perfect for Auburn to accomplish that, but the Tigers could do it and seem to be hitting on all cylinders in advance of their Saturday evening showdown in Oxford against the Ole Miss Rebels. The 7:15 PM (ET) kickoff at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium will be carried by the SEC Network, and it's Auburn going off -4 presently, that spread having doubled since Bookmaker first sent it out -2.

While the spread has been a bit dynamic, the total has stagnated on its initial 63 point hurdle, the 'over' requiring a little extra juice for college football bettors.

Tigers Off Explosive Performance Vs. Arkansas

After running roughshod over Arkansas last week, Auburn (5-2 straight up, 6-1 against the spread) moved up six places to No. 15 in the AP Top 25 and seven to No. 17 in the Coaches Poll. The Tigers amassed nearly 550 yards on the ground in routing the Razorbacks, 56-3, easily covering as 10 point favorites on the NCAA football odds, and they're averaging close to 300 yards per game rushing in four SEC contests.

Winning out means having to beat Alabama on the road, never an easy task, but such a feat would send the Tigers to the SEC Championship and make them serious contenders for the playoffs despite having fallen to both Clemson and Texas A&M.

Meanwhile in Baton Rouge, Mississippi (3-4 SU & ATS) was busy dropping its 2nd-straight conference game, and third SEC defeat of the season, with a 38-21 setback to LSU. The Rebels allowed the Bayou Bengals to roll up 311 yards on the ground, a huge problem for Hugh Freeze's troops on the year with Ole Miss 113th in the country against the run (226.8 ypg).

'Over' Has Been A Winning Play In The Magnolia State

It's a rivalry that was sporadically played the first 60 years of its existence, but has belonged to Auburn in the meat of its existence the last quarter-century. The Tigers have won 20 of the last 26 encounters to go up 29-11 in the series, Gus Malzahn's bunch 14-2 in their most recent visits to either Oxford or Jackson.

The Rebels won it last year in Auburn, not having quite enough to cover the 27-19 victory as 8½ point favorites. The final fell well short of a 57½ point total, but the 'over' has dominated games played in Mississippi, cashing tickets eight of the last nine tilts.

Saturday looks just about perfect for football in Oxford, nothing but clear skies and temps warming into the low-80s during the afternoon. It should be in the mid-upper 70s for the boot with just a hint of a SW breeze.

Neither team has any new injuries to report, so there won't be that excuse after the final gun sounds. Wish I'd gotten on this from the start when the spread was half as large, but I'm still willing to make my free college football pick on the Tigers.
