Free College Football Pick ATS - Georgia Tech vs Georgia

Georgia Bulldogs Player Rushing With Ball

The Georgia Tech vs. Georgia game is one of the longest running and most storied rivalries of late November. Expert capper Joe Gavazzi takes a look into the NCAAF odds and makes his pick.

Georgia Tech at Georgia (-4) Noon ET

Last year, Georgia won this matchup 13-7 as 3 point road chalk in Atlanta.  Historians will balk at my selection of the Bulldogs in this rivalry game based on history. You see, the away team is on runs of 15-2-1, and 11-1-1 ATS in these meetings. Each team enters the game at 7-4 SU with Bowl Bid in hand, on mini winning streaks, but with no shot at their respective Divisional crowns in the ACC (Georgia Tech) and SEC (Georgia). That makes this one mostly for pride and bragging rights.

Georgia Tech is playing in its 9th year under veteran HC Johnson.  He is one of the pioneers of the triple option attack. Until last season, his Yellow Jackets were among the league leaders in rushing the football. Last year, however, as opponents began to figure out this once unique attack, his running game slipped to 257/5.3. Along with it the Tech fortunes plummeted from 11-3 SU to 3-9 SU. Though the Jackets have rebounded a bit this season, the running game has not.  They are throwing the ball a bit more and average just 257/5.5 overland. Last week against Virginia, they could only outrush the Wahoos 199-89 and needed a +3 TO margin for the 31-17 win. They were actually outgained by Virginia 409-321. I love to play against those kind of upside down stats the week after they happen.

Much like Georgia Tech last year, the Georgia Bulldogs have slipped a bit under 1st year HC Kirby Smart. Taking over for long time successful Georgia HC Richt, Georgia’s offensive fortunes have plummeted from 24/381. Yet the defense has held the fort allowing just 133/3.8 overland. They need to rely on that excellence today to get this rivalry victory and extend a 3 game late season winning streak that has included a victory against highly regarded Auburn. In SEC play, Georgia is allowing just 113/2.9 vs. the rush. Though Georgia won this contest last year, there will be plenty of Bulldogs who well remember Georgia’s 30-24 loss on this field 2 years ago as double-digit favorite when Tech players partied as if they had won the Super Bowl. With Georgia RB’s Chubb and Michel in the backfield, it may actually be the Bull Dogs with the better running game.  Series history reversed in this one with the Georgia winning cover.
