Last week Joe Gavazzi picked underdog Arkansas to beat Auburn, and cashed. This week, applying the same approach he has selected a good underdog on the NCAAF odds board with cashing opportunity.

 Washington (-10) at Utah 3:30 ET FS1

Each week in this space, I offer the UNDERDOG OF THE WEEK. It is a selection that was embarrassed last week in this spot when we had Arkansas (+10) in their systematic destruction by Auburn.

Washington is 7-0 SU to start the season. They are that rare breed that has met the expectations of preseason hype. Credit 3rd year HC Petersen for their ascent in maintaining their focus each week!  Sixteen RS with an offense led by QB Browning set the table for this still young, but developing team. They have 200 Clubbed their last 3 PAC 12 opponents while averaging 43/467 on offense for the year. The defense has certainly done their part with numbers of 15/319, a huge accomplishment in the PAC 12. Before you get ready to “take off the rubber band” with these Huskies, a closer inspection of the schedule may be in order. An opening month home slate of victories against Rutgers, Idaho and Portland St. means nothing!  At the start of the season, (4) PAC 12 wins against Arizona, Stanford, Oregon and Oregon St. may have appeared impressive. But, a closer inspection of these teams finds them to be a combined 10-18 SU for the year, including just 3-14 SU in PAC 12 play. Not very impressive! Now, the must travel to face what will prove to be their toughest challenge of the year.

Utah is a team, who is talented in both lines and is playing with great momentum. For the year, the Utes have a 200 Club offense that is averaging 30/433. It is backed up by a solid defense allowing 22/363. Today, they are a double digit home dog on a field where they are 10-1 SU the last 2 seasons. They are coached by 12th-year mentor, Kyle Whittingham, who is 14-9 ATS as dog the last 4 seasons, including 4-2 ATS as home underdog. The Utes are 7-1 SU for the season, 4-1 SU in the PAC 12 with their lone loss at Cal on October 1st (28-23). In that game, most improbably, it was the Bears’ defensive front that kept Utah out of the end zone in a first and goal situation in the closing minutes. With a victory today, however, Utah can rectify that issue with a victory against the league leader. Last week, RB Joe Williams returned to the lineup, running for 331 yards in a 52-45 upset at UCLA. At altitude, against a team who has yet to be truly challenged, it will be no surprise to this bureau, if this 7-1 SU momentum home dog gets the outright victory.
