Low Profile South Florida Rivalry
The Florida International Golden Panthers will host the Florida Atlantic Owls on Thursday at Alfonso Field, and the opening kickoff slated for 7:00 PM ET. According to College Football odds, FAU is a 7.5 point road favorite, and there’s currently no posted total. These two schools were past members of the Sun Belt Conference, but have both made the switch to Conference USA, and are part of the East Division. The underdog has covered 4 of the last 5-games between these teams.

Owls Regroup after Tough Early Schedule
Florida Atlantic began the season by taking on two highly ranked teams on the road, and both games resulted in blowout losses. They were outscored by a combined 96-7 in those losses at Nebraska and Alabama. They’ve since bounced back to win 2 of their last 3-games. Their lone loss in that sequence was a narrow 20-19 defeat at Wyoming, and that final margin came when the Cowboys kicked the winning field goal with just 0:15 to play in the game. Their 2-wins both came at home, beating Tulsa 50-21, and last week 41-37 over Texas San Antonio. The win over UTSA came in dramatic fashion, as the Owls scored two touchdowns in the last 4:10 of the game to overcome a 37-27 deficit, and the last touchdown resulted from a 15-yard passing play with just 0:20 to play.

FIU Steadies the Ship
The Golden Panthers started the season on shaky ground, losing at home 14-12 to Bethune Cookman who plays at the FCS level. If that was the low point of the season, then last week was the high point. FIU was a 13.5 point underdog on the road versus UAB, and came away with an impressive 34-20 upset win. That was a huge confidence builder considering they started the year by going 1-3, and all 4 of those games were at home. It’s quite evident over the first 5-games, that FIU relies heavily on a defense that’s 23rd nationally, and allowing opponents just 317.8 yards of total offense per game. Their offense on the other hand has been a work in progress. The 34-points they scored in last week’s upset win were a bit deceiving. The defense forced 6 UAB turnovers in that game, and two of the touchdowns came on interceptions returns that were taken to the house.

Final Analysis
There’s a lot of value to be had with a home underdog, that plays very good defense, and in a rivalry game.

Free Pick: Florida International +7.5 over Florida Atlantic at 5Dimes.
