Bronco Mendenhall and the BYU Cougars are nearly 2-TD favorites on the college football odds board for their Friday night contest at the San Jose State Spartans.

For those of you who are not going to be in Central Texas for the first day of Wurstfest this Friday, all I can say is you're missing a helluva' good time. It's like a week-&-a-half of St. Patrick's Days with men in lederhosen and women in dirndls instead of everyone wearing just green. And, oh yeah, plenty of beer and cancer-causing sausages.

Since you're not going to be here for the opening, might I suggest making a wager on the Friday night battle out west between the BYU Cougars and San Jose State Spartans? 10:30 PM (ET) kickoff at Spartan Stadium just south of the Bui Phong Bakery where I recommend the Con Todo sandwich for a pregame snack.

Sportbooks following college football odds sent this one out with the Cougars laying 12 points. The early movement has been on BYU, now laying 13½ while TheGreek is going with a 57 point total.

These two schools met often back in the fifties and sixties, but are getting together for just the fourth time since 1969. San Jose State holds a 10-6 all-time advantage, and has covered the last three meetings with 'under' bettors cashing twice in that span.

The Spartans were 3 point home 'dogs three years ago when the teams met on this turf and posted a mild 20-14 upset thanks in large part to a late fumble by the Cougars. It was the first time the schools had played in San Jose in over 45 years, and the final never threatened a 47½ point total.

Cougs Banged Up On Offensive Line
Brigham Young (6-2 straight up & against the spread) brings a 4-game win streak into the affair, the Cougars' only two losses coming in September when they made back-to-back road trips to UCLA and Michigan. Bronco Mendenhall's bunch has enjoyed two weeks off since waxing little Wagner from the FCS, 70-6, leaving the Cougars needing one more win to become bowl eligible.

All four wins in the streak came in Provo, and BYU managed to cover all but the 45-38 decision over East Carolina who was getting 10 at the closing bell. The offense has cranked up while the run defense clamped down in the stretch. The Cougars are averaging 45.7 points per game and nearly 560 yards of offense in the four wins, limiting opponents to under three yards a tote along the way.

College football bettors will want to get training room updates before going to the window since four starters on offense are listed as questionable. Three of them are on the line where Ryker Mathews, Ului Lapuaho and Kyle Johnson are all doubtful with various injuries. Tailback Adam Hine, the team's 2nd-leading rusher, is also still mending an ankle injury that has kept him out of the last four games.

Can BYU Stop SJSU's Ervin?
San Jose State (4-4 SU, 5-3 ATS) saw its Mountain West Championship hopes dashed three weeks ago in a 30-7 defeat to San Diego State, but the Spartans managed to bounce back and keep their bowl hopes alive with a follow-up 31-21 victory over New Mexico. Senior tailback Tyler Ervin blasted past the 1,000 plateau against the Lobos, pounding out 263 yards on the ground to currently sit third in the nation with 1,159 yards on the ground and 12 touchdowns.

The Spartans also have their fair share of key personnel who will miss Friday's battle due to injuries. On offense, leading receiver Tyler Winston saw his season come to an end two weeks ago with a knee injury in the win over New Mexico while backup running back Thomas Tucker is questionable with a bum ankle. Cornerback Jimmy Pruitt, fifth on the team with 31 tackles, is questionable due to a concussion.

Mother Nature should cooperate with this one, the early forecast calling for partly cloudy skies and a kickoff temp in the mid-to-upper 50s. I'm expecting the Spartans to keep this one closer than the spread, so let's go with the home team for our college football pick.
