After sitting out Week 1 due to a suspension, Nick Fitzgerald returns to lead Mississippi State in an early kickoff Saturday at Kansas State. How will the quarterback's presence affect your NCAAF picks?

Another early-bird special to get the day rolling with a Bloody Mary, along with a free college football pick to begin our Saturday with a cha-ching? Plus, it’s another mashup of SEC and Big 12 schools in the bowl hunt? Count me in.

This interconference clash between No. 18 Mississippi State and Kansas State should be a little different than last week’s Ole Miss-Texas Tech collision, meaning we’re not expecting to see 47 points in the first half. In fact, we may not see that much scoring the entire game with Saturday’s total set at 54. The same shops setting that number are favoring the Bulldogs by 8½-9½ to send the Wildcats to defeat on their own turf.

K-State Avoids Embarrassing Loss In Opener

Mississippi State did beat that total on its own last week in a 63-6 decision, though it must be tempered by the fact it came against Stephen F. Austin as 48-point chalk at BetOnline. Considering that new head coach Joe Moorhead is known for building high-octane offenses, it wasn’t a surprise to see the Bulldogs roll up more than 600 yards of offense against a weak opponent. Still, expected strong play from the defense was a big reason behind the 8½-win total Mississippi State is out to beat in 2018.

Kansas State began the season with NCAA football futures set at a more modest six wins, and also posted a win over an FCS school in its season opener. The dubya didn’t come near as easy as Mississippi State’s, however, as the Wildcats needed a late rally to get past South Dakota as 3+ TD favorites. Four turnovers – two balls left on the ground, two more picked out of the air – almost cost K-State, and Bill Snyder has to be concerned with the play of his two QBs, Skylar Thompson and Alex Delton, who combined to complete just 13 of their 28 aerials.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

#RoadDawgs going to the Little 🍎!

📍Manhattan, KS. #HailState🐶 pic.twitter.com/tg4OlnxLKP
— MSU Football 🏈 (@HailStateFB) September 4, 2018
\n\n"}[/]

Fitzgerald To Return Under Center For Bulldogs

The only history between these two schools came more than 40 years ago, so there are no recent trends for us to concern ourselves with. We do, however, need to keep an eye on the weather as the remnants of Hurricane Gordon are responsible for the 60%-70% chance of rain in the area Saturday morning, which could make for slick conditions on the AstroTurf at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

Maybe it was first-game jitters that led to a less than impressive performance by the Wildcats last week. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, were paced by sophomore Keytaon Thompson, who threw for five scores and ran for two more. Thompson will now head back to the bench with Nick Fitzgerald returning from his suspension to guide Mississippi State, and I expect him to make up for missing the opener and make my play on the Bulldogs a winner.
