With some key players returning for the Wildcats, they have been made the home favorites. Our betting expert take a look into the NCAAF odds and provides his views on this game.

This year Kentucky is expected to be a bit better than last year considering they have a good amount of starters back on the offensive side of the ball. Today they take on Southern Miss in a game that should be a nice matchup of offenses. Being at home and with key starters returning offensively Kentucky has been made the home favorite but can Southern Miss pull off the upset?

Southern Miss
The Golden Eagles averaged 39.9 points per game last season which ranked them 13th nationally and return starting quarterback Nick Mullens. New coach Jay Hopson has inherited some good talent and they are expected to be right in the mix of the Conference USA championship. Offensively they have a nice mix of new guys and starters back including Mullens and running back Ito Smith along with All-Conference USA center Cameron Tom.

I don't believe the coaching change won't affect them all that much for this pass happy team as the philosophies of the new coach and offensive coordinator are in line with the schemes they had in place last season. Last season on defense Southern Miss led the conference in yards allowed in conference games and ranked second in points allowed. Although they lost a few key guys on that side of the ball there is a decent nucleus of players returning. After going through a lull of a few seasons it was nice to see Southern Miss last season back to where the program is used to being and I expect for them to give Kentucky all they want today.

Kentucky Wildcats
The Wildcats average 24.7 points per game last season which ranked them 10th in the SEC and 95th nationally. Most everyone returns on that side of the ball and Kentucky is expected to be better than last season anchored by running back Boom Williams who has a chance to be all SEC. Crucial to them is that they have four of five starters back up front but that same line will have to improve from last season ranking  85th nationally in sacks allowed.

It is never easy to score in the SEC but Kentucky is expected to do just that with their solid returners and a good offensive coordinator in Eddie Gran who comes over from Cincinnati who rank sixth nationally in total offense. Defensively they're going to have some problems and this is the main reason why I like Southern Miss today. They did allow just 198.1 passing yards per game last season which ranked them 28th nationally and they do return a young but decent secondary. However, they are only returning one full-time starter up front and they could struggle to get pressure on Mullens. With some question marks on this side of the ball, I don't expect for them to be able to be consistent enough in stopping Southern Miss to win this game by touchdown or more.

Most of the Top Online Sportsbooks have come out making Kentucky of -6.5 favorites across the NCAAF Board. For my NCAA football pick, I'm going to back the Southern Miss Golden Eagles to stay within the number getting the +6.5 like at Bookmaker -110. With Florida up next for Kentucky in the defense with some question marks going into this game expect for the Golden Eagles to put up enough points to stay within the small number and possibly even pull off the upset. Both teams will score but grab the points.
