Richardson Stadium is the location for this week’s degenerate dumpster dive as the 0-3 Charlotte 49ers host the winless Georgia State Panthers on Saturday at 6 p.m. ET. Come take a dip with this free NCAAF pick.

Georgia State Panthers vs Charlotte 49ers

Both Charlotte and Georgia State are relatively young programs, founded in the 2010s. Neither have pieced together a winning season, going 16-64 SU overall. The Panthers rallied for 6 wins in 2015, losing to San Jose State 27-16 in the Cure Bowl. A postseason birth looks highly unlikely for either this season. Together, the 49ers and Panthers are 0-5 ATS to begin the year, playing 14 points per game below the number (+12.4). One has to go back to Week 8 of last season to find a Saturday they each covered the spread in the same weekend.

Charlotte fans see this brewing I-85 rivalry as a special matchup. The 49ers won its first game as an FBS school 23-20 over the Panthers in the 2015 season opener. The victory is one of just four all-time over a fellow FBS opponent. Charlotte went of 7.5-point underdogs in their debut.

Like in 2015, the press picked the 49ers to finish last in the Eastern Division of Conference USA this year. The offense is a disaster, accruing just 3.8 yards per play. The passing game is particularly weak, ranking 123rd with a 40.74 completion percentage. Turnovers, though, is the unit’s Achilles heel. It has coughed up the ball nine times and gifted a pick-6 in each of its first three games. Ouch.

Georgia State’s new head coach Shawn Elliott is looking for answers on offense, too. The Panthers have scored 10 points in two games. The team is coming off a 56-0 loss at No. 5 Penn State. The Panthers coughed up the football five times but moved the chains well enough with 21 first downs. The unit won the time of possession battle as well but failed to find the end zone against a superior Big Ten defense.

Quarterback Conner Manning, a Utah graduate transfer last season, commands the Panthers offense. He led the conference with 268.4 passing yards per game in 2016, named Sun Belt Conference All-Newcomer for his efforts. At some point, the unit will bust out. The Panthers average 17 points per game below betting market projections in 2017.

Georgia State enters a bit roughed up after its rout in Happy Valley last time out, but has to feel this is a must-win contest. The school learned AAC officials canceled its Sept. 30 matchup with Memphis due to rescheduling because of Hurricane Irma. A 6-win bowl birth just became much more difficult.

The Panthers are the better team, here. There is a new coaching staff in place, which helps explain the slow start, but the team is getting better by the week. The secondary is its strength and should dominate against a poor Charlotte passing game. The 49ers have yet to win a contest as a program with a spread falling inside a touchdown, going 0-5 SU and 3-2 ATS. The 49ers lost to FCS N.C. A&T  35-31 as 10.5-point chalk last Saturday and are in disarray. Lay the points with the Panthers and lean the under for your college football picks. Miscues and errors will feature in this dumpster fire.
