Yet, you might be surprised. San Jose State is not the surprising example. The Spartans are 5-7, and so if they have lost most of their recent games, you would think that it’s normal. The Spartans are the normal team here. They lost three of their last four games to miss out on getting to six wins, which is normal for almost every bowl team. There happen to be three 5-7 bowl teams this season only because the bowl lineup went from 38 to 40. San Jose State is one of them because Missouri turned down a bowl bid, which it would have been able to pursue if it wanted. San Jose State failed on defense in most of its final games, giving up 37 points to Nevada and 40 to Boise State in a pair of losses which were sandwiched around a win against lowly Hawaii. There’s not much reason to recommend San Jose State.

Georgia State is the 6-6 team here, but the Panthers are actually on a roll. They were 2-6 and headed for a long offseason, but they then regrouped and won each of their last four games. The Panthers found a spark and were able to make adjustments in midstream. They were also able to improve even in the midst of their winning streak. The Panthers defeated teams which weren’t that great in the first three games of their streak, but in the fourth game, they beat a bowl-bound team, defending Sun Belt Conference champion Georgia Southern. The huge win lifted Georgia State into bowl position. The Panthers probably wouldn’t have been in this game if they had lost. This must make them very excited to be where they are. It is the first bowl game in the history of the program, and that’s going to give the Panthers a lot of energy when they take the field on December 19.

Line Moves
The college football odds started with San Jose State as a five-point favorite and that line has dropped a point and a half to 3.5 points. People can see that San Jose State doesn’t deserve that much of the benefit of the doubt, even though it plays in a better conference, the Mountain West, compared to the Sun Belt. Georgia State is playing this game a lot closer to home. The Panthers are more motivated. This lines up well for them.

Notable Injuries
San Jose State has receiver Tyler Winston out for this game with a knee injury. Linebacker Jared Leaf is out for the season with a concussion.

Georgia State does not have notable any injuries.

Handicapping The Game
Georgia State is going to be through the roof with excitement for this game. For San Jose State, it will feel more like a chore to fly across the country.
