The Cowboys went on to lose five of their remaining six regular season matchups; the one victory came in the finale on the road against Oklahoma, a victory that earned Oklahoma State a bowl berth.

In the Cactus Bowl, the Cowboys overcame Washington 30-21 to to close out the season in positive fashion. Mason Rudolph took over as the starting quarterback towards the end and ended up guiding Oklahoma State to two wins in his three starts. Meanwhile, Desmond Roland led the way out of the backfield with 770 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns, while Brandon Shepard paced the Cowboys in receiving with 39 catches for 737 yards and five scores.

Oklahoma State Cowboys: 2015 Look-Ahead
First, let's examine the schedule that Oklahoma State will be dealing with here for the 2015 season.

It should be a relatively easy non-conference schedule for the Cowboys, as they'll do battle with Central Michigan, Central Arkansas and UTSA before opening up Big 12 play with a huge road game at Texas on September 26th. Oklahoma State will face all the usual suspects before ending the regular season with another edition of the Bedlam Series; this time the Cowboys will host Oklahoma, looking for another victory over against their harshest rivals.

We talked a little about Rudolph earlier, and he'll be counted on to run the show for Oklahoma State this coming season. As a freshman, he made an immediate impact upon being thrusted into the starting role. His swagger brought life to a stagnant offense and helped the Cowboys end the 2014 campaign on a high.

Along with that excitement that Rudolph brings comes higher expectations, as we've gotten accustomed to seeing Oklahoma State be one of the top dogs in the Big 12 and the school's loyal following is waiting anxiously for them to compete at the highest level. However, there are a number of other teams to worry about in the conference, namely TCU, Oklahoma and Texas A&M, so the Cowboys are going to have to show up with their best game week in and week out in order to hold their own.

That high-level competition in the Big 12 is what's making us hesitant to even take a shot in the dark with a futures wager on Oklahoma State. The Cowboys should be much more exciting to watch with Rudolph and wideout Brandon Shephard leading the show offensively, but ultimately it's hard to envision them having a better season and finishing above the rest of the pack, TCU especially.

As a result, with our college football picks, we're going to stay away from Oklahoma State heading into the new season.
