It was an overtime thriller last year when Colorado and Colorado State got together, and we've got a free college football pick for this year's battle between the Rams and Buffs.

Colorado State Rams vs Colorado Buffaloes

Normally, the most intense of rivalries aren't scheduled until later in a given season. Then again, the annual clash between the Colorado State Rams and Colorado Buffaloes is not your normal rivalry as the two schools prepare to begin their 2016 campaigns against each other for the eighth time in 10 years.

The 88th collision between the Rocky Mountain State foes gets prime-time treatment from ESPN this Friday, kickoff coming a few minutes past 8 PM (ET). This will be the seventh consecutive season the Rams and Buffs battle it out in Denver at Sports Authority Field, and Colorado is holding steady as a 7½-8 point favorite on the NCAA football odds board.

5Dimes, which draws an A+ rating at, has CU -8 after listing the Buffaloes as high as -9 this summer, with 57 for the total after that shop opened it at 54 in mid-August.

Buffs Have Ruled Series, Future Of Rivalry In Doubt

It took overtime to decide last year's matchup, a true classic in the series that was first played way back in 1893. Colorado State led early then forced extra play with a TD in the final 4½ minutes of regulation, the sides deadlocked at 24. Colorado then blocked a Rams field goal attempt in OT before booting the game winner for the 27-24 final.

That final pushed a -3 spread which favored the Buffaloes and avenged a 31-17 loss to CSU in 2014. The win lifted Colorado to a one-sided 63-22-2 advantage over the history of the rivalry, though the Rams have closed that gap a little by winning four of the last 10 outright.

The schools are already set up to play this game through the 2020 season, the next three also in Denver with that last one in Fort Collins on Colorado State's home field. How much longer the rivalry lasts after that remains to be seen, a sticking point being the Buffaloes want it played at campus stadiums while the Rams want it to remain in Denver. What I read into that is CU wants a bigger share of the gate when it is played in the Mile High City, so we'll see how it all plays out.

With CSU Already Locked In For The Upset, Our Free Pick Is On Total

If you haven't been following the weather in Colorado the past week or so, then you've missed some crazy early winter stuff, including a big hail storm in Colorado Springs on Monday to thermometers already well below freezing and snow atop Pike's Peak. Fortunately, the Denver forecast for Friday doesn't include any of that, and in fact calls for some downright warm temps. We'll still have some sunlight for this 6 PM local kickoff, the thermometer in the low-80s under a few clouds with a 9-10 mph NW breeze.

We briefly covered this contest a while back, putting SBR readers on upset alert with a Moneyline play on CSU at +255. A wager made is a wager played, so I'm obviously still on that bet and will instead focus more on the total this time around.

Both teams lost their top downfield threats from last year, CSU bidding adieu to Rashard Higgins while Nelson Spruce used up his eligibility at Colorado. Neither school was very good against the run, and the Rams are breaking in 3-4 new starters on their defensive front this year. Plus there's the 1-7 O/U trend in this series, all of which adds up to my free college football pick being on the 'under.'
