Week 1 of college football season is in the books & it is time to review & try to learn something that will help us with our Week 2 college football picks.

Although there were a fair share of teams that did pretty much what the college football odds makers expected them to do there were a few upsets in the opening week of the season. Let's take a look at the most notable stunners now that the first week is in the history books.

Portland State 24 - Washington State 17
Think quick, what is the nickname for Portland State? Okay, then try this - did you even know there was a school named Portland State? Now I'm not talking to you Mr. Big Sky Conference illuminati. I am talking to the rest of the world that doesn't follow Division 1-AA college football quite as closely as perhaps we should based on yesterday's shocking result.

If you were one of the squares, hand up head bowed, who jumped on Washington State and lost a college football pick because they were at home and playing a team you didn't recognize then you sir got absolutely no adrenaline rush for your gambling dollar. That's because when you're laying 31 points and your team is only up by 10 at the half you have a feeling it's not going to be your day. But when your chalky home favorite is tied after the third quarter then you actually start rooting for the upset don't you? Well, the Vikings of Portland State made a statement when Steven Long plunged into the endzone after a 14 play drive to seal the deal for the little team that could.

Remember this and look towards next week if you can find a sportsbook hanging a number on Portland State at Idaho State. Portland State is ripe for a letdown while the Idaho State Bengals are coming off a 55-0 thrashing of Black Hills State. Fade the Vikings if you can.

Northwestern 16 - Stanford 6
I think it is fair to say the Cardinal of Stanford (that's right it's Cardinal without the S because when you're wicked smaht you don't need no stinkin' plurals) will no longer reside as the 21st ranked team in the country. There was a bit of foreshadowing that something was awry when the line dropped two points at the close of the college football odds and visiting Stanford went from a 12 to a 10 point road favorite.

Based on the way things shook out we know now that the college football odds makers felt it coming but what no one knew was that the they had the wrong favorite but exactly the right line. The Northwestern fans were in a frenzy when their Wildcats played mistake-free football and dropped a defensive hammer on Stanford to upset the Cardinal (whichever one he is) and begin the season with an exclamation point in their 16-6 victory.

BYU 33 - Nebraska 28
While this game doesn't necessarily qualify as a stunner it cannot be eliminated because anytime a 6-point road dog connects on a Hail Mary with no time remaining to win the game then you get ink in my book. And that is exactly what happened in Lincoln, Nebraska in a storybook finish with the young freshman quarterback Tanner Mangum taking the reins for star senior starter Taysom Hill who was knocked out of the game with a season ending foot injury.

Mangum launched a 42-yard sphere of desperation that found its way into the lovin arms of 6'6" receiver Mitch Mathews. That was all she wrote as the Cougars rallied in spectacular fashion to defeat the Huskers in their own playground 33-28.
