TCU Horned Frogs vs West Virginia Mountaineers

The West Virginia Mountaineers have certainly impressed oddsmakers and the betting markets as evidenced by the fact they are laying close to a TD here against a very rock solid TCU Horned Frogs program but I am not as convinced they deserve this type of lofty pointspread range for this game. West Virginia is 5-0 SU but the wins have come against Youngstown State, Missouri, Kansas State, BYU and Texas Tech—none of those teams as good as this TCU squad and it’s worth noting their wins against Kansas State and BYU came by a combined margin of 4 points. West Virginia barely beat Kansas State at home by a score of 17-16--the same K-State team which got drubbed 38-17 at Oklahoma last week while TCU gave Oklahoma all they could handle losing 52-46. The TCU Horned Frogs are off a bye week and head coach Gary Petterson wasn’t impressed with his team’s performance in a lackluster win--a 24-23 escape against Kansas two weeks ago. He vowed to instill a lot more toughness and focus on his team going into this game and I expect it to show here.

There is no doubt this West Virginia team has one of the better defenses they’ve had since Dana Holgorsen has been the head coach of this program but extra time to prepare and improve for this inconsistent TCU offense led by Texas A&M transfer at QB Kenny Hill should lead to a much more cohesive and better performance on that side of the football. On the other side of the equation, TCU’s defense also has had its share of struggles this season but you give Patterson (whose background is defense) plenty of time to prepare and the results have been very good as shown by his 12-1 SU record off a bye week as head coach of the Horned Frogs. The West Virginia offense led by QB Skyler Howard has been good as he has a 66.1% completion rate with 8 TD’s and 4 INT’s but this is one of the better teams they’ve been up against this season and I’m not convinced West Virginia will win this game at all let alone by a TD or more. TCU has beaten West Virginia in B2B years. West Virginia’s only win against TCU since 2012 when TCU and West Virginia joined the Big 12 was a FG margin of victory for the Mountaineers in 2013. I’ll back TCU as my College Football Pick Of The Week.
